Smile Good Morning,

Is it possible to 'connect' family members to the tree so that in reports they are shown as 'probable' or 'possible' relatives. All help appreciated but please keep it as simple as possible. Many Thanks,

Melm: )

I am not sure that I understand what exactly you want to do.

Are these connected people are relatives or not? If they are then there isn't any problem for them to show up like relatives in any report. If not and the relationship is uncertain, then you have to specify what exactly you want to show in your reports.

Good morning again,

Sorry if I confused you. I am in contact with other researchers researching the same family name but using programmes other than Genopro. When they send me their reports of items of their tree they can include 'possible' family members. These are people who you are sure are related but lack the final evidence or proof. I am unable to transfer this info onto my tree. If these relatives are included on the tree the report shows them as definite family members, if they are not connected they don't link up into any respective areas only as seperate individuals.

If I still haven't clearly explained what i'm looking for I could send you an attachment with an example on.

Regards,  Melm

I am thinking of adding a pedigree link named "Possible Child".  This type of link could be used also when doing independent research to give leads for further investigations.

You are raising a good question.  What about using the regular pedigree link (biological child) and change its color to red to indicate the pedigree link is under investigation.  You can write a comment on the pedigree link giving a bit more details about the source of your search.  Would that work?

But can the report generator distinguish between the two? It is still the biological child link for the report - no matter what color it has on the pedigree.

I think that those uncertain relatives be on a different GenoMap - a research GenoMap - and that the referance to those who are in this GenoMap will be different than from other individuals on your tree.

You are entirely right, the report generator cannot distinguish the real biological children vs the colored-flagged possible children.  This is problematic.

I am thinking of adding a pedigree link named "Possible Child".  This type of link could be used also when doing independent research to give leads for further investigations.

This is a good idea.

When researching via the Census information in the UK, it can be difficult sometimes to be sure you have the right person, especially if the name is relatively common. So far the published data are for 1861, 1881, and 1901. With the 20 year gaps, people can go missing between the census years when they move house, get married, die, etc. Therefore, it is useful to be able to indicate a 'Possible Child' (or 'Probable Child'?) until further confirmation is obtained.

At present I have to insert a Marriage Link (with a label to indicate the dubious nature of the link) over the top of the Pedigree Link so that only the comment is visible. I am reluctant to use a colour to indicate this type of link as I colour code different 'families' within my tree.

How about some sort of dotted/dashed line and the addition of a Label to the Pedigree Link (as for the Marriage Link)?

I think that those uncertain relatives be on a different GenoMap - a research GenoMap - and that the referance to those who are in this GenoMap will be different than from other individuals on your tree.

This is also a good suggestion, but the problem of the link still remains.

This is a complex issue, because the "Possible Child" may be from the father, the mother or both.  The case of a possible child from a father is obvious (and the most common), but there can be a case where a man had multiple wives and multiple children.  It is possible to know each husband' child without knowing the exact wife.  The third case is a couple who may have had children, but there is little data to support it.

I think that what will solve the problem is a GenoMap in which all the research options will be in. What I mean is that if I get a pedigree which might or might not relate to my tree I will put it in this GenoMap. If I prove that the pedigree is related I will then move it to the proper place in my tree. If not then I can erase it.

The text boxes and the comments within individual can let me add whatever I want to describe the problem with the pedigree. There is no limit to the number of pedigrees in a GenoMap, so I can add as much as I find.

The report generator will act as if it is my own tree and print it with the comments I enter, so who ever see it can read it. As Dan told us before there will be also an option to exclude the GenoMap from the report, and by that to ignore the information in it.

I have also come across this problem and used the 'non-biological' relation of adopted or foster child to indicate uncertainty (with colour code) However I have not discovered a label attaached to the link. Is this in the pipeline or do you use a normal text box?
