My goal is to maintain the family tree info on my desktop but be able to have much of the information on my PDA. I'm looking at Gedstar Pro because I've heard good things about it and it supports photos. But the only way to get info from Genopro to Gedstar Pro that I can find is to use a Gedcom file. But I'm not getting any photos imported into Gedstar Pro this way & I think it makes sense, since a .ged file seems to be wholly text.
SO...is there/will there be a way to export family tree info, including photos, to handheld software, such as Gedstar Pro? (IOW, a "bridge", I suppose would be an applicable term.)

Firstly, are you using the correct GenoPro 'Export to Gedcom' option? GenoPro has two versions of the Gedcom Export.I suggest you use 'Export to GEDCOM using the Report Generator' (then select 'Export to Gedcom' as the skin name). This produces a Gedcom 5.5 compatible file, with pictures linked via a path in the OBJE tag. The GedStar Pro documentation states that it supports this format and its PC conversion program should be able to access the picture files via these links and convert them to the format required by Gedstar. Note that neither GenoPro or the Gedcom files contain embedded pictures, instead they merely hold the path to the file held elsewhere on your system. The Gedcom specification does in fact allow for multimedia objects to be encoded into text format and embedded in the file but this feature is rarely used as the encoding algorithm is nonstandard and poorly documented. GenoPro's other 'Export to GEDCOM format' built-in option does not produce a file compatible with the Gedcom 5.5. specification and generally is not useful when transferring data to other systems.

I was able to export the Gedcon 5.5 file via the report generator skin. But I'm not able to import that file into Gedstar Pro. Per the Gedstar Pro log:
"Unsupported character set: "UTF-8" Fatal error "Unsupported character set" in file TCGedProcess.cpp at line #1829 Indiv: 0"
I'm assuming that's due to the "CHAR UTF-8" line in the file exported by Genopro? Per Gedstar Pro, the import file should be in ANSEL. I was not able to find anyplace to change this in my gno file, but I did find this page that seems to indicate the character set can be changed in the skin?
I also found this thread that seems to be discussing this very problem. (Post # 16050, specifically.) But am not sure if there's a resolution for my situation, since I"m not using XML files. (Unless I purchase one of the competing products, import the unicode gedcon file & export as ansel...:w00t
(This stuff is ALL new to me, sorry!)
Also, thank you for explaining about the OBJE tags specifiying the path to the images. Makes perfect sense, now that you've explained it!
Thanks, again!

Hi Susie, The post you have mentioned expands on the problems of ANSEL encoding. However, if your file contains only English text without accented characters you can probably just edit the generated .ged file (e.g. with NotePad) and replace the word UTF-8 with ANSEL to keep GedStar happy. :Otherwise, the other solution using Legacy Family Tree or PAF to import UTF-8 gedcom and re-export as ANSEL does not involve any purchase as free versions are available.

Thanks, so MUCH, Ron! That did the trick.
(After all this & finally getting everything transferred to my PDA, I realize now that Gedstar Pro doesn't associate the photos with the individual, but has all the photos in a single photo gallery. I already have an excellent photo viewer on my PDA (Resco) so may bag the option to transfer photos from Genopro to Gedstar Pro. )
And I'm now, officially a registered user of Genopro!
Thanks, again & have a great week!

It might be worth persevering a little longer. I notice that the Gedstar Pro photo conversion page, http://www.ghcssoftware.com/propcdoc/index10.html has three options - Primary, first photo, & all photos. Gedcom does not have a standard tag for indicating primary photo, so that will not work. Try 'all photos' or 'first photo' option instead.

Thanks, Ron for the additional prodding! I had done 'all photos' but changed it to 'first photo'. That option does associate a photo with a person! (You call up the person & then click on the camera icon & voila - photo of said person!) I really like being able to see a photo of the person from within their "profile" in the genealogy program on the PDA!!! Thanks, again, SO MUCH!!!!
