How do I control report narrative? I know how to choose 'in', 'at', etc. when address an address - but in the report narrative, when someone is dead, it says 'has been living' at xxxaddressxxx rather than saying 'lived' at xxxaddressxxxx. When it is their current address, it reads past tense: 'lived' at xxxaddressxxxx rather than saying current tense: 'has been living'. Please help. Narrative control seems impossible and I am becoming VERY dissatisfied with the program as I have numerous other problems too.

With the latest Genopro version, you should get: 1) '... has been living ...' if an Ind is alive and if the End Date field is blank or 2) '... lived ...' if an Ind is dead or if an End Date has been input. The involved template Phrases are the 'PhOT_...' located in Dic starting at line 1794, processed from lang.vbs at line 1552. I checked the contact for one of the individuals. There are 3 contact addresses, ie., 2 previous addresses and 1 current address. The current address has no end date, while the previous addresses have end dates entered. The Descendent Report for this individual uses 'lived' at for all 3. The current address should read 'has been living' at but does not. I also checked another individual who only lists current address. A beginning date is entered and the end date is blank. Again, the Descendent Report reads this individual 'lived' at rather than 'has been living' at this address. These are not isolated problems. I have no clue as to what your next statement is referring to concerning the templates.

It is extremely difficult to read in people's mind! In your 1st post you're talking about the Narrative Report and now the Descendants one. For your info, these are 2 separate reports running different scripts. The only common part is that they're using the same Dic version. Also you're now mentioning MULTI address/occupancy entries.Anyway, I created 3 dummy entries for one of my alive Ind, keeping the last one 'open' (blank End Date) and the result is: 1) Nar Rep: It says 'lived', 'lived' and 'has been living'. Therefore OK.
2) Desc Rep: It says 'lived' everywhere. To be addressed.
and with the same Ind ticked as Dead:

Up to Ron now to sort out (Descendants.js line 235). JC

Thank you for reporting this - if I don't know it's broke, I can't fix it.As JC illustrates in his post, I made a mistake when translating the VBscript of the Narrative Report to JScript for the Descendants Report. I now have a fix that will be in the next release. A pre-release will be posted on this forum in a few days. 455673 (8/14/2008) How do I control report narrative? The narrative is intended to be data driven and should control itself. If not let us know here.I am becoming VERY dissatisfied with the program as I have numerous other problems too. The forum is here to offer help and advice and share experiences with GenoPro, may be others have experienced the the same 'other problems' and have a solution, so why not try posting your further issues here?

In my first post, I briefly described my difficulty in controlling the report narrative. Narrative is a general term for a story, or account of events or experiences. Inasmuch as the software program is 'controlling' the report narrative relative to the data input, I sought to learn what I was doing wrong. In reviewing the wording of my post, I did not refer to a report called 'Narrative Report' and only recently learned there is a report called 'English Narrative Report' in the report skin(s). After reviewing your initial response to my post, I double-checked the End Date fields in the Contact Properties and found that a few did not include an end date. I have only recently began using the GenoPro software, and pursing genealogy information for that matter, and it was my error to assume if an individual was deceased, the narrative of the report [report narrative] would default to past tense and so your response was of great help. Nevertheless, these few corrections did not correct the issue and I responded with a second post and attempted to provide more details, naming the specific report, Descendent Report, in my post and cited examples. I found your response to my second post to be unnecessarily critical, condescending and factually inaccurate. As previously stated, I was clearly not talking about two different reports; but even if I were, was the tone of your response necessary? Furthermore, the two examples provided were to illustrate the problem and demonstrate that the problem in the report narrative was not isolated. As revealed in a subsequent post, there is some tweaking needed to the report narrative in the Descendent Report and so I now know to wait for this fix rather than continuing to expend valuable time attempting to resolve the issue on my own OR in bothering someone else, such as yourself, with the issue. While the amount of time, energy and patience required to assist others less knowledgeable than oneself often goes unappreciated; seeking information via a posting venue, especially when one only turns to such venue when despite considerable time and research the solution remains elusive, only to be attacked in such a fashion, is clearly equally unappreciated. I sincerely hesitate to ask the question I have about footnotes.

I assumed I was doing something incorrectly rather than there was a little tweaking needed in the report narrative for the Descendants Report. Thank you for your courteous response.

Hi 455673I read this thread and believe there was no intention to upset you, just to understand and fix the problem. It is difficult to express personalities on a Forum like this, so easy to upset one another Please update your Profile, so we can know a little more about you , and you can become a valuable member of the forum. You have already helped Ron by showing a problem we were not aware of until your report. and please report your problem with 'footnotes'

Hi 455673,
I must admit that when I read your first post I also thought you were referring to the Narrative report. Be that as it may, I don't think there was any intent on JC's part to be "unnecessarily critical, condescending and factually inaccurate". I am a regular reader of this forum and have found JC always readily willing to help with problems. I think this is shown by the effort he made to assist you.

Regarding your other problems, as you are new to GenoPro, please be patient. I have been using it for over 6 years and have found that most of the problems I had were of my own doing in the way I was entering data or my initial lack of understanding of the way it works. Indeed, I am still learning! However, when I do discover bugs, I have found that you are treated with respect and that they are investigated and actioned in a prompt, professional manner.
You will find GenoPro to be an excellent product and well worth persevering with.
Bob.
