The adding of places [& perhaps other resources] is a little awkward. I have found that I can only add places from within a person. So I can't add a parent place easily. I have to go into a person add the child. Then add the parent, remove it, replacing with the child. This then needs editing and the parent being added.

In the table layout view I can add a source/citation but cannot add places and locations. The other items do not seem to be addable here either. It is a little strange that we cannot add and edit the items in this view. I'm researching places and want to be able to add the hierarchy and details at the same time so I can then make one or more connections between places and people.

As with all things computer there are alternative approaches. The obvious point is that you can not add a parent place to a new place if the parent does not exist.

It is possible to add places in other areas and the logical place is the Contact tab. Create the first place and then click on the New button in the lower part of the menu and create the parent. Go back to the first place and edit it and link to the parent.

This is because the Place is an "object" in the computer memory rather than plain text (a sequence of alphanumeric characters).  The Table Layout is not powerful enough yet to instantiate objects and edit them within cells.

There are so many references to places that being able to view and edit in one dialog could make some sense. I have found some confusion myself due to the many tabs that places can be referred to.

I have realised I can do it another way it's just a little awkward. In TableLayout select a child, press enter choose the sources tab press ctrl-n, create the new place, remove it as publication place then back on the general it can be made the parent. This will also allow me to add many place at one go I think.

You can always use Ctrl & N to create a new place whenever cursor is in a place field, so when you need parent & child places, simply use Ctrl & N , enter parent place details, click OK, then Ctrl & N again, this time enter child place details, setting its parent place to one previously created, click OK. You can carry on adding more places this way if required.
