If I select 'Display index of timelines in the report' and then select my family I get a very useful overview of which individuals were alive at the same time. There is a vertical scroll bar so that I can see everyone included but where is the Horizontal scroll bar that will allow me to move back and forward in time?

You can drag the timeline left or right with your mouse (click and hold on a blank area). You can also zoom in or out with the spyglass buttons above it.

Mmmm. Not very intuitive.

There are also 2 problems I have noticed with this:

1. When you click and hold down on an apparently empty area of the timeline it very often throws up an information box about individuals or couples that are no where near the cursor. On a crowded timeline this makes it very difficult to find an empty space.

2. Upon releasing the mouse button the vertical scroll bar automatically jumps (very annoyingly) to the 50% position taking you away from the things you looking at.

A horizontal scroll bar would be much more obvious and would not suffer the above problems.

I'm only the engineer who bolted it in and not the architect. A clever guy David Huynh at MIT built the Simile Timeline widget. I have thought myself that a horizontal scroll bar would be good too. Also space has to allocated on each track for the text associated with an event and this is a fixed length so that is why clicking on an apparently empty space causes the info bubble to appear. It is better to click a space to the left of the events but as you say not exactly intuitive!

Life's always a compromise I'm afraid.

Maybe one day I could look at providing buttons to scroll the timeline.....

I've had a look at the example given at http://www.simile-widgets.org/timeline/ and would comment as follows (NOTE: The numbering refers to my original 2 reported problems):

1. This looks more like an implementation problem than a basic problem with the widget. To see what I mean try this:

a) On the example shown at http://www.simile-widgets.org/timeline/ place your cursor just before the bullet point at the start of any event on the timeline. Move your cursor gradually over the event and notice that just as the cursor crosses the bullet it will change from an arrow to the pointing finger. Keep moving your cursor along the event text and note that at the end of the event text the cursor changes from the pointing finger back to the arrow. This applies regardless of how long (or short) the event text is.

b) Try the same on a timelime chart on a GenoPro generated web page. You will find that the cursor does not change back from the pointing finger to the arrow for quite some distance after the event text finishes. I guess this is due to the fixed length text field that you refer to.

I think this demonstrates why it is so difficult to find a spare space on the timeline chart to drag the time axis around. If they can support variable length text fields in the example it shouldn't it be possible to do the same in GenoPro?

2. The problem with the vertical scroll bar that positions it to 50% when you release the mouse button has been reported as a bug so I guess I'll just have to wait until the fix the bug and up-issue the widget.

Yes you are right. The Timeline code has moved on since I grabbed a copy a while back to use for the Narrative Report. The development of the Timeline back then was pretty stagnated but it looks like the move to Google Code has stimulated some new work. I used a copy of the code to provide stability and also to allow some code changes to support the GenoPro Report usage.

I need re-apply my modifications to the newer release and test. I will see what I can do.

I think this would be a valuable enhancement. I look forward to your next revision of the report generator.
