Hello Developers,

I have recently purchased your product and I love it I have been researching for few years now your software is the right fit.

How ever Adobe discontinued SVG viewer, are we going to use something else in the future please let me know.

Thank you,

Robert

The Report already has an alternative way of presenting the Genogram as a pdf file. However for this to work you need to download the free graphics program Inkscape, which generates the graphic.
I do not usually use IE8 and just tried it. As you probably have found, the link to Adobe does not make a correct installation of the viewer. However if you use Firefox and install IEtab, an IE emulator, you can see the Genogram.
Somebody else may have sorted out SVG for IE8, probably by copying the files to the appropriate directory.

Hi Robert,
You can specify in the Configuration Parameters when generating a report that you only want PDF genograms.

I see no reason to remove SVG from the Report just because Adobe have made a commercial decision to push their proprietory (ex Macromedia) Flash technology and drop support of their SVG viewer. SVG is an Open standard and is text based and much easier to generate than Flash.
MIcrosoft also appear to have chosen to ignore the widely adopted open standard SVG in favour of their more obscure VML spec. It may also be an open standard but no one else seems interested in it. SVG was once mooted for IE8 but was dropped as MS like to call the shots.

An SVG rendering engine is included with Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome & Opera but at present only Firefox works reasonably well with the GenoPro SVG diagrams. I will look to provide better useablity with at least Google Chrome/Safari.

The Adobe SVG viewer is still available for download from Adobe and works with Windows 7 & IE8 and so can still be used.

Not sure what is happening there but I also cannot get this to work with IE8. It should launch GenoPro as an ActiveX control within the browser and open the FamilyTree.gno file that should be present in your report folder. MS have 'enhanced' the security features for IE8 and this may be causing a problem.

I also prefer keeping the SVG support. It can be rasterized easily if target medium doesn't support it. In another project I am satisfied with Batik rasterizer:
http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/batik/tools/rasterizer.html
I use it in the following way:

java -Xmx512m -jar batik-rasterizer.jar -m image/png C:\test.svg (PNG output)
or
java -Xmx512m -jar batik-rasterizer.jar -m application/pdf C:\test.svg (PDF output)

That may be far ahead in time and far late for Microsoft but I really think that SVG will be fully supported in IE9.

MIX - Microsoft, W3C and SVG
In addition to our engagement in the SVG Working Group, Doug Schepers, W3C Team Contact for the SVG Working Group, and I are going to be presenting SVG: The Past, Present and Future of Vector Graphics for the Web, at MIX 2010 in Las Vegas this coming March to share help developers understand where SVG is headed. At Microsoft we have been investigating how SVG can deliver graphics for the next generation of the Web Development. Its inclusion in HTML5 promises many opportunities for developers to enhance their sites. We will provide an overview of SVG and how the standard is evolving to support a broader range of applications on the Web.
