I love this idea; I have some very large genograms that are absolute tangles of lines, and something like this would make them much easier to read. To me, the easiest way to implement it would be to draw each line (whether horizontal or vertical) with white "padding" on both sides (equal in width to the line itself should be sufficient); then the Z-position would determine which line remains visually continuous. Allowing the user to change the colour of the padding from white might be useful too, in the case of large genograms in which a different colour is desired for each surname or ancestral line; lines that go through box objects will be a problem either way, because the padding can't change colour midway through a line.
