Can I change the narrative place name?

If yes, how?
By GenoProSupport - Friday, January 23, 2009
With GenoPro, everything can be changed.  In the Table Layout (Ctrl+T), click on the Places toolbar button, double click on the place you want to edit, and change its name to something you wish.

Yes... I know this, but in my version of GenoPro this function is disabled

Please look at this:

Please help me

Edit:
Of course I can use NameDictionary.xml, but it is not an optimal solution... I want to anable this option in the table.

The greyed out area at the bottom shows the text associated with the Narrative Prefix on the left

Edit the name at the top of the table where it say Place Name (in English version)

Yes... but I'm using polish language, and as you probably know - the most difficult language in the world (of cource without Chineese  )

We've lots irregular forms, and there must be a difference betwen the value "Place name" and "Narrative Place Name",

e.g.
Place Name: Starogard Gdański
Narrative Place Name: w Starogardzie Gdańskim

What are the reasons for this change? This is the first question you have to ask yourself. If it is a gender problem, you can solve it by creating a custom(gender) tag for places and enter F for female and M for male. Then you have to adjust and amend your dictionary file to cater for those conditions.
Since it seems to be a language specific condition you have to explain yourself in detail if you want to have advice. Some other languages have similar problems and were solved.

I meant:

If the place name is eg. Starogard Gdański, we say:

Starogard Gdański is the city of his family. - Starogard Gdański to miasto jego rodziny.

but

He was born in Starogard Gdański - On urodził się w Starogardzie Gdańskim (not "w Starogard Gdański")

I suggest you create a new place with this new name and use this name for this person`s birth place until you have solved this grammatical issue.

A present there are two ways to derive the locative case of a Proper Noun as you require in Polish. The first is to use NameDictionary.xml as you have indicated.

The second way is to use a VBScript 'regular expression' via the Dictionary entry LocativeProperNoun but this will be very difficult or even impossible unless the locative case can be generated using a simple set of rules.

Alternatively it is possible to add code to handle an extra Custom Tag for Places, e.g. Name.Locative to hold this form which will allow you to add it via the Table Layout by adding this Custom Tag column. I have made the required coding changes in the attached Init.htm file that you can try in your custom Polish skin. You can enter the locative form either with or without the preposition, but if it is included ,or indeed is not required, then any leading space must be entered and the place name should be enclosed in square brackets. e.g. either ' w [Starogardzie Gdańskim]' or 'Starogardzie Gdańskim'.  In the last case the standard preposition action will be applied.

If you can confirm that this meets your needs then I will include it in the next release of the Report skin.

Hi, Ron.
Now it works perfectly in Russian! Thank you!
This will improve considerably the narration for Slavonic languages.
But I think it will be a difficult way for users (not for translators).
Meanwhile in all dialogues New Place and Edit Place we may choose the Narrative Prefix to be used in the Narrative report. In the field to the right from the Narrative Prefix field we may see how this word combination looks like. But now we can change nothing in this field.
Here is a proposal: would this field be not Read only the changes in the word inflections will be
made by the users and automatically inserted afterwards to... the Name Dictionary (for example). Then the report will be created in the correct way and with due regard for these changes.
Is this possible?

Hmmm...

Your Init.htm doesn't work correctly with our Polish skin... Unsure

I think using the NameDictionary.xml will be better, but how should I create this file, and how to use it (language codes etc.)?

Please write me soon. You don't know how many people will be happy to solve this problem Cool

According to the last post: I agree completelly with Alex, enable this field will be better solution for all users of GenoPro in the world.

Please help us Smile

Edit: I've created the newest Polish skin, which works perfectly with version 2.0.1.6.
I've uptaded it on http://support.genopro.com/Topic18532-103-4.aspx

The only problem is the narrative forms of places, so help us as soon as possible.

I have now added a version of Init.htm to my earlier post that works with 2.0.1.6 (EN version at least :heheSmile. You will obviously need to rename this to back Init.htm

Let me know the details if this still gives problems.

But I suggest you try and move your Dictionary & Config to the latest Narrative skin as there are issues with thumbnails and other items in 2.0.1.6.

The NameDictionary approach is probably the least user-friendly. However the requirements are documented at the head of the skeleton file included with the skin. You need to add lines such as this for eaqch of your places at the end of the file where indicated by the line <!-- Place your own entries below here -->

   <N P.PL="Starogard Gdański"  P.PL_L="w [Starogardzie Gdańskim]"/>

and then set the Configuration parameter in the Language Settings section to get locative noun forms from the NameDictionary

and to Alex,

Yes indeed I agree whole-heartedly that it would be good to have something similar integrated into GenoPro itself. However this requires that the proposal is adopted by GenoPro Inc. for inclusion in the product. GenoPro Gamma is now approaching a year late so I wonder when or if it might get included. I have put in many 'work-arounds' via Custom Tags - so many I can't remember all of them! One day I must write a guide to customising the Narrative Report .....

Generating a report with your new Init.htm makes an error:

Generating report to 'D:\GenoPro Reports\Moje Drzewo Genealogiczne\Polski (2.0.1.6)-new2\'
Cloning document Moje Drzewo Genealogiczne...
Opening configuration file Config.xml for skin '\Polski Raport Narracyjny (2.0.1.6) - init\* (Polski Raport Narracyjny)'...
Loading Dictionary.xml...
[0.00] Processing template 'init.htm'...
[0.01] Processing template 'index.html'...
Error at line 38, position 1 (Code/Util.vbs): Niezgodność typów: 'arrGeneralSettings'
Microsoft VBScript - błąd czasu wykonywania 800A000D

I think that this error makes only some differences between Polish and English skin. I'm waiting for your answer.
By genome - Tuesday, January 27, 2009
The error 'Type Mismatch' on line 38 of Index.htm suggests to me that your Init.htm has not executed correctly. I have downloaded it and rechecked and it works ok with EN and PL

Maybe your download is corrupt.

Please right click on the attachment and select 'save target as' and save it as Init.htm. You can check it is the correct version by computing its MD5 checksum. I calculated it to be 64a79051da1482123b72a79dcc2b7ab1 using HashMyFiles-u

THANK YOU RON !!!!

You were right... When I cheked the MD5 sum of my file, it turned out that my Init.htm is incompleted. I've downloaded it again and now it works perfectly with all Slavian versions, included my newest Polish.

I'll create some tutorials how to use your idea to inform a lot of Polish GenoPro users about generating reports with irregular noun forms in the nearest future.

Greetings, and thank you again Smile

My small tutorial is now available in this topic (Polski Raport Narracyjny - Nowa wersja).

I hope you'll use it and enjoy the solution of new Slavonic grammar problem!
