I keep getting the following error message and GenoPro crashes while I'm doing normal editing of individual records.
GenoPro 2011 - Picture Your Family Tree! has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
I have used GenoPro for years and have never had this problem before. It has happened repeatedly for weeks now and I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling GenoPro 2011 to no avail. I am running Windows 7 and usually have my browser and e-mail open but not much else. The rest of my system is perfectly stable. Windows does not come back with any further messages,

Which version of GenoPro are you using? The most recent version is 2.5.3.9.
If you can reproduce the problem, can you please send me a sample .gno file to reproduce the crash. Thanks.

I am running version is 2.5.3.9. I guess it comes and goes because it's not happening right now. I have learned to save frequently after unfortunately losing some changes in the past. I have only one file, my composite research database, which I have been using for years, adding and editing along the way. I keep a backup at all times. Is it possible that the file has become corrupted? It loads fine, with 0 errors reported. Is there a way to diagnose the file for glitches? If no one else has this problem then I guess I'll just have to live with it.

Feel free to send your file at support at genopro.com and I will open it under the debugger. The debugger does literally million of asserts to make sure the data is coherent.

I received your file and I cannot find any error. My feeling is GenoPro has a bug causing the crash. If the crash occurs again, please tell me a bit the scenario so I can reproduce the bug.

It's happening again. I am simply opening and closing individual records, cutting and pasting from an Excel Spreadsheet and then GenoPro crashes. I have the search dialog box open and then double-clicking on the tree to open an individual... which is when it usually crashes. Sometimes it crashes when I close the individual and resume searching. Either way, I get the same Windows error message I have described above. I lose all the changes I have made and GenoPro does not remember the file which was last open. Is there a memory usage setting I need to adjust? It seems like a memory overload problem of some sort.

Please send me a sample file causing the crash and I will try to copy & paste the the content of the Table Layout to a spreadsheet.

I sent you my file above. It's the only file I use.

I am unable to reproduce any crash on my machine. Can you give me a step-by-step scenario. For instance:
1. I edit the properties of Mary Ann Fondy and change her middle name to Anne. 2. I search for all names containing Ann. 3. I open the Table Layout and copy the entire table to the clipboard, and get the crash.

The crashes have happened dozens of times under many different circumstances. I really think it is a memory allocation problem. Is there a setting for this within GenoPro? Or could there be a conflict with something in my system?

I think I found the problem. There seems to be a conflict with a program I use called Replay AV. When Replay AV is running, GenoPro crashes. The conflict was elusive, because Replay AV is an internet radio recording program, which starts and stops on a schedule. I found that if Replay AV is loaded, but has not yet run, GenoPro will run ok... but if Replay AV is running, or has run since booting, Replay AV will crash. So if Replay AV has run, I can unload it using Windows Task Manager, then GenoPro will run ok. I hope there can be a bug fix to allow these two programs to work together.

Thanks for the feedback. I had no idea such a third party program could have such an effect on GenoPro, however being a software developer, I can give you an explanation. The program Replay AV probably has a "hook" on several the global events on the machine, and to achieve this, it must load a library (DLL) and hook it in the memory space of every program including GenoPro. If you use a free tool such as Process Explorer (from http://www.sysinternals.com ), you will see a DLL from Replay AV running inside the memory of GenoPro. If Replay AV has a bug, or causes a fault while GenoPro is running, then GenoPro gets the blame, because the code was executing within the memory space of GenoPro.

I downloaded and tried diagnosing with Process Explorer but could not find any hooks as you described. However, since downloading the latest GenoPro update v 2.5.4.0 the problem seems to have disappeared. Its either coincidence, or something was done to fix the bug.

A very similar thing is happening to me, as of this morning. I was editing fine last night, but now all I can do is open the genogram. If I try to do anything - including select any item on the menu bar, I get the message that Genopro 2011 has stopped working. Then the next thing I click on causes it to crash and disappear.
I am not running anything else on my system (which is Windows 7). When I look at the windows crash info it tells me I am running Genopro version 2.5.4.0. It is a registered copy. I have tried reinstalling, but the same thing happens.
Unfortunately my genogram is HIPAA protected data and I cannot send the file. I hope you can offer advice in spite of this...

Can you send a sample .gno file causing the crash, and some step-by-step instructions to reproduce the crash?

Since can not edit the file xxx.gno with GenoPro, nor can it transmit the files due to HIPAA, you may: 1) with WinRar or WinZip open xxx.gno and extract the file Data.xml 2) Open the file Data.xml with NotePad and delete all the rows from "<name ...." until ".../ name> " (54 times). If necessary, delete other information which might lead to identification of persons. 3) save the file and send it by GenoPro / File / Send ...
Maybe so you can discover the mystery (?)
