I loaded my ISP's personnal web space with my tree files and registered my site to several search engines. Today, for check and trial purpose, I typed the first and family name of one of my relative. Oh surprise when MSN search came up with an entry, first of the list. I recognised straight away my ISP's icon and clicked on it.

The problem is that the first page loaded was Toc_individuals.htm, meaning there was no icons (the 8 basic icons:home, ..., contacts, places) but only the "Name Index" list. Also after clicking on an individual, on a family and/or on a green tree, a new window opened everytime. Needless to say that my contact email ad, from a visitor point of view, was nowhere to be found.

Any way of making these search engines open the basic default first front page? Thank you.

This is quite normal so scroll down to the bottom of the page that comes up and you will see the following:-

The important thing is to click on :-  Click here to display the entire genealogy tree report and this will open the default or index html with frames etc.

The search machine finds the name which is first found in the "toc_individuals.htm" but not the index.html

I hope this helpsTongue

Thank you for your answer but I still don't think it will help any site visitor.

The aim of publishing my gene tree on the web is to find a visitor who may recognise somebody and/or his/herself within the tree, who will drop me an initial email and hopefully, after discussion, I will add up some missing info, given by such visitor, into the tree.

So I wish that the Genopro programming team find a way, if possible of course, to properly make the search engines open the site from the default page showing the 8 icons and the 2 list panes. Maybe by rearranging, relocating or modifying the meta tags and/or any other data/keywords or trade tricks searched by the engines. I'm not expert in this field.

What I did was to put a scrollable full names list on the home page of my web site and the major family names in the "meta names" with links to the tree from there.

This means that the web crawlers find the names there as well as the toc_names htm.

The text on your home page helps researches as well.

I just did a search for names on my tree and found the home.htm came up without frames and so I scrolled to the bottom and clicked as I said above to open the default htm.

To give users a choice of whether or not they are redirected to the home page when they come across toc_individuals.htm or another single page via a search engine try changing the following in the <body  onLoad="..." script from
if (self == parent) document.getElementById('divFrameset').style.display='block';
to
if (self == parent) {document.getElementById('divFrameset').style.display='block';if (confirm('Do you want to visit the home page for this genealogy tree?')) window.location='default.htm'};

You can either edit the generated *.htm files or change the tempate files in your skin folder. i.e. toc_*.htm, individual.htm & family.htm and rerun the report. Leave any other text in the <body> onLoad attritrbute unchanged.

Alas, this is not possible, otherwise the pages will not be indexed all.  We spend significant time tweaking the navigation to optimize the search engine indexing.  Re-directing to the homepage would void the entire report, and will make almost impossible for the developers to modify/upgrade the templates.

Does this mean that Ron's solution is the only other possibility appart from the link already generated at the bottom of each which I indicated above ?

I think most people would scroll down anyway and find the existing text and link you put there Dan.

By 'home page' I meant the top frame of the report, i.e. default.htm. I don't see how this voids the entire report, as the visitor is taken to the logical start point of the report. I admit I know nothing about search engine optimisation, so if I am missing something here I am willing to learn.

To force the visitor to the start of the report each time you could change the <body> onLoad from

if (self == parent) document.getElementById('divFrameset').style.display='block';
to
if (self == parent) window.location='default.htm';
i.e. cut out the choice.

Thank you Ron.

I modified my toc_individuals.htm file, reloaded it onto my site and it seems to work fine. The default.htm comes up.
