Hi All,

I select an individual and use one of the options to select decendant families.

1. The spouse(s) are not getting selected - how to do it.

2. Is there a way I could generate report for this selection?

3. In the reports, the second tab is showing names index and shows the names of people by the Last name

Can I generate another one where the names of the people by the first name can be listed?

I am no programmer and also does not understand on how to edit skins. Can anyone indicate the location of various skins available?

Thanks in advance for the help provided.

1 Right click over the selection to bring up the menu; move to 'Select' again and click on Mate. You might want to repeat the process for siblings but try it out

2 The easiest way is to copy the selection and paste it to a new GenoMap. Then you can generate a report on this selection. You could also use the Move to GenoMap but copy is probably better if you do not want to repeat it. You can also create a new file and paste into that

3 do not know here

Finally all the standard skins are packed inside GenoPro. If you want to edit them you have to unpack them by going to the Report Generator and clicking the button New Skin. There are many topics on this forum about what the files do and the headers of the individual files contain a lot of information about the things that can be changed easily

Hi

Thank you!!

On the reports front, my question was - can we have the names listed in a-z order (i) on FirstName basis sort and (ii) on Lastname basis sort?

For this I was told to select the way in which the names are displayed, but it did not work.

As my trial period is about to expire, I need to make a decision to buy the software immediately so that the tonnes of data I have entered is not lost - please help

regards

It is not clear (to me) what you are trying to do with the report. The standard report within GenoPro 2007 (and this applies to most of the earlier Beta versions) lists surnames in alphabetical order and under each surname the individuals are sorted alphabetically.

Your request seems to say that you want to list ALL individuals by their forename in alphabetical order. It would be possible to modify the Report Generator to do this but you would be on your own here and would require at least moderate understanding of programming.

If you just want to sort all names alphabetically this is simple within the GenoPro table - which of course is accessible from a web based report if the PC has GenoPro installed. You may have overlooked that you can install and use GenoPro on any PC, unregistered, and use it as a viewer.

If you have not tried this sorting within the table then all you have to do is click on the heading 'First Name' or 'Last Name' and that column is sorted.

Finally do not think your data will be lost. You can always use GenoPro to view it and if you need a bit more time you can download a later Beta for an extra 30 days evaluation (unless you are on the latest version of course).

If you do finally decide that another program is better for you then you can export your data from the Report Generator using the Gedcom skin. This is the best way of transferring data to another program, rather than using the 'Export to gedcom' facility

Thank you for a prompt reply. Most of my problems are resolved and you have given me a clear idea.

However, what I would like to ask is to indicate on how or where I need to make the modifications in the report generator.

Once again, thanks a ton!!

To create a new style report you need to open the skins which are now bundled within GenoPro. To do this, open the Report Generator and click the button New Skin. This will unpack the files into a sub directory of your GenoPro installation as Customized English Narrative Report.

Within this directory are two sub directories; the one labeled Code contains two files where changes may be needed; most files are in the the main directory.

There is a lot of documentation on all of this at
http://www.genopro.com/sdk/

Good luck

PS If you are starting to create a new skin, make sure that you are working on the latest version of GenoPro. There were significant changes of tags at the last stage of development which means that skins written at an earlier stage do not work with GenoPro 2007

Hi All,

After learning the Report Generator with the help provided, I could now achieve the way I wanted my report, but with a problem.

Now I want to have both of these reports generated at the same time, but I am at loss - any help is appreciated.

Type I - Surname / Last Name report - which is used in Default - A-Z Surname Index

achieved by the existing code in Init.htm

For Each i in Individuals
strLast = i.Name.Last
If strLast = "" Then
strLast = i.Name.Last2
End If
Set oDate = i.Birth.Date
.....
If (strName <> "") Then
iCount = iCount + 1
strNameLast = i.Name.Last

Type II - First Name Index report which I want to load when I click on the single individual icon (ref - TOCIndividual.htm). Now it loads the type II report whereas I want this report which is generated by the following code

For Each i in Individuals
strLast = i.Name.First
If strLast = "" Then
strLast = i.Name.Last2
End If
Set oDate = i.Birth.Date
....
If (strName <> "") Then
iCount = iCount + 1
strNameLast = i.Name.First

I have changed Last to First and I have got the Type II report I need.

Can anyone help me achieve both the reports - Type I to be in the default and Home page and Type II for TOC_Individual.htm

Thanks in Advance

If you are happy with your amended first name index then you can add it to the report as follows:
  1. name your amended skin file toc_individuals1.htm keeping the original toc_individuals.htm unchanged.
  2. add it to config.xml by inserting the line:
     <Report Template="toc_individuals1.htm" />
    below the existing line:
     <Report Template="toc_individuals.htm" />
  3. edit heading.htm to add an extra button by adding the following line below the similar line for toc_individuals.htm:
    <a href="toc_individuals1.htm"><img class="buttonicon" src="images/toc_individuals1.jpg" alt='@[Report.WriteTextDic">alt='@[Report.WriteTextDic">alt='@[Report.WriteTextDic">alt='@[Report.WriteTextDic "AltIndividuals1"]@' title='@[Report.WriteTextDic">title='@[Report.WriteTextDic "AltIndividuals1"]@'/></a>
  4. Add an extra line in Dictionary.xml
    <AltIndividuals1 T="Display all individuals in the report by first name" />below the existing <AltIndividuals T="Display all individuals in the report" /> line
  5. Create a new button image images/toc_individuals1.jpg by editing the existing button image images/toc_individuals1.jpg using paint.exe or some other graphics editor.
  6. Generate your report!

I haven't tested this so I may have overlooked something. Post again if you still have problems

Thanks Ron.

The problem is solved.

I have created another file InitFirst.htm with the changes indicated and added in the config.xml with a copy of TOC_Individual as TOC_FirstIndividuals and it is working to my satisfaction.
Report Template="InitFirst.htm" - copy of Init with changes
Report Template="index.html"
Report Template="default.htm"
Report Template="toc_FirstIndividuals.htm" - copy of TOC_Individuals as it is with name change
Report Template="init.htm"
Report Template="toc_individuals.htm"

Thanks for developing such a strong software with which users like me also can play around...but if a single map of links between all these files would help us beginners in Report Generation...
