Smile Good Morning,

Is it possible to 'connect' family members to the tree so that in reports they are shown as 'probable' or 'possible' relatives. All help appreciated but please keep it as simple as possible. Many Thanks,

Melm: )

I am thinking of adding a pedigree link named "Possible Child".  This type of link could be used also when doing independent research to give leads for further investigations.

This is a good idea.

When researching via the Census information in the UK, it can be difficult sometimes to be sure you have the right person, especially if the name is relatively common. So far the published data are for 1861, 1881, and 1901. With the 20 year gaps, people can go missing between the census years when they move house, get married, die, etc. Therefore, it is useful to be able to indicate a 'Possible Child' (or 'Probable Child'?) until further confirmation is obtained.

At present I have to insert a Marriage Link (with a label to indicate the dubious nature of the link) over the top of the Pedigree Link so that only the comment is visible. I am reluctant to use a colour to indicate this type of link as I colour code different 'families' within my tree.

How about some sort of dotted/dashed line and the addition of a Label to the Pedigree Link (as for the Marriage Link)?

I think that those uncertain relatives be on a different GenoMap - a research GenoMap - and that the referance to those who are in this GenoMap will be different than from other individuals on your tree.

This is also a good suggestion, but the problem of the link still remains.

This is a complex issue, because the "Possible Child" may be from the father, the mother or both.  The case of a possible child from a father is obvious (and the most common), but there can be a case where a man had multiple wives and multiple children.  It is possible to know each husband' child without knowing the exact wife.  The third case is a couple who may have had children, but there is little data to support it.

How about not limiting the possible relation between parent and child, but extending it to other relations too? I.e. instead of having a "possible child" as a relation of its own, it would be more neat to have for all existing relations the option "unverified" or "not verified" only as an attribute of the relation, with some visual indication too (see also old topic Disconnected branches link on lacking information on the relation between two individuals).

Agree.  Perhaps a unified attribute system for the validity of information.  I need to do a similar thing for sources & citations to determine how "reliable" is the source.
