| I love the 2007 version In the report section text where grandparents and siblings etc are named I would like the option of a stepmother or father. I have situations where the birth mother died young and the stepmother is the only mother the children have known yet there seems to be no way to give her the recognition she deserves. I did say "option" as I can think of situations where I wouldn't want this.

I agree with you it is difficult to document those things with GenoPro 2007. Do you have suggestions?

| One solution to the step mother/father documentation/reporting problem is for GenoPro to introduce an explicit 'single parent' family relationship (shown in green in example below) and also introduce a 'step child' pedigree link type (shown in dotted brown in example). The 'single parent' family relationship is also useful when only one parent fosters or adopts a child (e.g. a step child) (Note that in the U.K. both parents must adopt the child, even if one is already the biological parent). It could also be used in cases of a child born via donor sperm for example. A child by egg donation is a little more difficult - is the recipient mother the 'biological' mother? Perhaps a qualification of the biological pedigree link would be required. All that is required from GenoPro is perhaps to have the addition of a 'Single Parent' value for the Relation property and add the 'step child' to the PedigreeLink enumeration. Additionally it would be good if GenoPro validated and maintained that the family relationship has only one parent when the Relation is set to 'Single Parent'. I envisage that the step child pedigree link would only be added when the user wants explicit reporting of the fact. e.g. as in the case stated by the author of this thread when a step mother plays a major role in a child's care. The single parent family relationship line can be placed adjacent/over the relationship with his/her partner as in the case of 'step mum' below to limit the confusion in the genomap. Maybe some other phrase could be used to replace 'Single Parent' Suggestions anyone? I had thought of 'no couple' (uncoupled?) but that's a bit odd.

Ron (8/17/2007) All that is required from GenoPro is perhaps to have the addition of a 'Single Parent' value for the Relation property and add the 'step child' to the PedigreeLink enumeration. Additionally it would be good if GenoPro validated and maintained that the family relationship has only one parent when the Relation is set to 'Single Parent'.Thank you for the suggestion Ron. The stepmother or stepfather relationship remains something to be done.
