There have been several requests, both on this forum and elsewhere, for the ability to import spreadsheets. The general answer is that they are different sets of data and not compatible. SmartGenealogy does export to Xls spread sheet and also imports them. However they need to be in a specific format.

This gives rise to the thought that if a single sheet spreadsheet format were defined then it should be possible to import into GenoPro. It could lead to a feature akin to the Gedcom import. This would be based on a text export from the table, such as csv or even xml (although older programs would not support this)

Looking at the xml file of a simple family shows that it contains a header followed by a list of Individuals; then a list of Families and finally the PedigreeLinks where Individuals are linked as "Parent" or "Biological" in the defined families.

A list of fields would need to be identified, including place & date of birth/baptism and of death. A separate import routine would be an easier way to deal with marriages. This would lead to a similar situation to the Gedcom import where, using LDS data, you usually get these separately and have join/merge the data manually.

Some of the information in the output relates to position. This would need to be derived in a similar way to the Gedcom import and presumably the same Auto Arrange routine could be used for that.

Any chance that this could be developed? Seems like the sort of task to give to a project trainee or as degree course work.

Importing data from a spreadsheet is always a case-by-case basis.  One approach would be to write a stand-alone application, may in VB or C# that converts the tabular data to produce an XML file for GenoPro.  This way, if soneome has a spreadsheet, he can download the source code and modify the code to fit his spreadsheet format.

This code has previously been produced in the conversation table excel import, together with an offer for help.  Perhaps we could ask the writer to post the VBA code so it could be stored by GenoPro and modified by users wanting to use this function.
