You are not doing anything wrong. The ISP Tripod does no longer distribute 'unknown' content, such as a family tree. In fact, GenoPro.com does no longer too. I wanted to prove this was working at http://www.genopro.com/skins/preview/ and all my .gno files are no longer accessible since I changed to a new server with Windows 2003 in November. I am currently investigating this issue. I suspect an extension problem since the file http://www.genopro.com/gno/MorinFamily.txt is still working.

I downloaded your family tree http://simmywi.tripod.com/tree/familytree.gno.txt and saved it under http://www.genopro.com/temp/familytreeSimmy.gno.txt. When I manually open the file familytreeSimmy.gno.txt, it works, but when I try it from the URL, it gets opened using Notepad. I am investigating this too.

I found out Internet Information Server (IIS) for Windows 2003 does not distribute unknown content. This stuff was working under Windows 2000. I had to manually add the ".gno" to the MIME type "application/octet-stream".

I will contact Microsoft to have the .gno extention "registered" as safe, and therefore distributed without having to configure IIS. By the way, if you add a global MIME type to IIS, you need to restart IIS.

If you want to distribute .gno files on your website, you may have to contact your ISP. The extension .gno is already known to database such as FILExt (http://www.filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=gno).

The other alternative is to rename the .gno to .txt. I still don't understand why sometimes the .txt opens in GenoPro (as expected) and the other time the .txt opens in Notepad.

Some web servers may even prevent to upload the .gno file by ftp.

That was exactly what happened to me when I tried. I still don't understand why and how I could fix this problem.

Humm.... I have Windows Server 2003 too. Can you send me the link of your report. Can you try to FTP another .gno file on your server and see if you get the HTTP Error 404 (file not found).

http://www.familytree.the-maynard-family.com

I actually have the website files located on a local hard drive of the webserver. I also have frontpage on this machine, so I am just refering the home directory of the website to the frontpage folder.

When I created the report, I had it generate the report in this directory.

If I rename the familytree.gno to familytree.txt, it will open via the web, but in notepad with barbage.

I would like it to open up in the webpage similar to what I have seen other websites do running genopro.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have spent days messing with applications and extensions trying to get it to work.

Sincerely,

Mike

Your file http://www.familytree.the-maynard-family.com/familytree.txt is correct. I downloaded it on my machine and opened it with GenoPro without problem.

Can you verify if the MIME content type was typed properly? I don't know what else to suggest. There is little to do when a server returns a "file not found". Perhaps flush a cache, but you already did this by restarting IIS.

Everything works if I am browsing the html locally. The tree opens right up inside the right pane. I figure that there has to be something in server 2003 isolating this extension, but I just can't figure out what.

Oh, I remember!!! This may work. I got the same problem with ASP pages. The server was returning file not found for all my ASP pages. I could not display a simple ASP page as:
<%="Hello World" %>
Guess what? It was a ISAPI filter named something like "Safe URL". It appears this filter was added during the last service pack. I found it by comparing Windows 2003 with another version of Windows 2003 on another machine. I never added this filter and I had no idea what it was, so I removed it and it worked. You will find this filter in IIS -> Local Computer -> Web Sites -> Property -> ISAPI Filter. The only ISAPI filter on the server is ASP.NET_1.1.4322.2032. I also have the Front Page extension for GenoPro (fpexedll.dll).

Great,

The main issue down. One of the things that I had tried previously, adding .gno and the executable path to the application extensions, I had not removed. With adding the .gno to the MIME, and removing one of the prior fixes that I had tried, it looks like I can now open the familytree.gno from the website. I also deleted an rcpfilter, but I do not think that that was the problem.

www.familytree.the-maynard-family.com.

Only one thing that I still need to figure out. If I open the familytree.gno link on the home.html, it opens up genopro in the right pane and shows the tree. by doing the same through the url, you have to open it using the genopro program. Is there anyway that I can make it open in the right pane?

Thanks for your help on the previous issue.

Figured it out.

I had also added a .gno web service extension as a prior fix. Deleted it and it now opens up in the right pane.

Thanks Again.

If my family decides to proceed with the tree, I will be purchasing the gold since your help was greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Mike

I have upgraded the server to the latest service pack. Each service pack has stronger security features. With the latest SP, any file with an extension not matching its content is not executed. As a result, the trick of renaming the .gno to .txt is no longer working anymore. I also tried to rename the extension to a built-in (known extension) such as .pdf or .gif, but it does not work either. The solution is to add the .gno extension to the MIME types, otherwise you get the "file not found" although the file is there.

Once the report generator is fully operational, I will do my best to contact Microsoft and convince them about GenoPro being a reputable product. If I am successful, future versions of IIS include the .gno in the MIME type. I don't want to give support about this issue in the future. I get emails about this issue almost on a daily basis, and I cannot do anything about it because I don't have access to the server hosting the .gno file. I remain committed to give support to users having a GoldenKey, however I am looking for a way to reduce the time spent on technical support. If necessary, I will remove the .gno file from the new report generator.

I added the DJVU MIME Type (image/vnd.djvu) support .djvu images.  You need a DJVU browser plugin to view those images.

This may be a separate issue, but when I use IE 7 to view the report, clicking on the tree link brings up a dialog which says:

Do you want to open or save this file?

Name: FamilyTree.gno
Type: Compressed (zipped) Folder, 44.8KB
From: {my website}

Selecting "Open" then brings up a dialog which says:

Do you want to save this file?

Name: FamilyTree.gno
Type: GenoPro Document, 44.9KB
From: {my website}

The file you are downloading cannot be opened by the default program. It is either corrupted or it has an incorrect file type. As a security precaution, it is recommended that you cancel the download.

Saving the file anyway and then double-clicking it brings up GenoPro with my tree in it.

I used Wireshark to watch the traffic go by, and my server (Apache) is sending the file with a MIME-type of application/octet-stream. I ran this test on Windows XP SP3.

Previously, one of my family members noticed a problem on Vista with IE 7, but this was before I fixed the MIME-type (it was previously text/plain). However, I suspect that the problem will persist there as well. When I get a chance to test it on Vista, I'll edit this post.
