If I want to just show a single line of descent, such as from father to son to son, etc. can I do this without having it automatically add the other parent? Whenever I try to link a person as a child to someone else, where there is only one parent, the program automatically adds a blank object for the missing parent. Can you set it to not add a parent unless you tell it to?

The problem is that there is no resolution in that referenced thread. The last message shows exactly how I want to see it but there's nothing that tells you how to do it.

Perhaps the author of the last message considered no explanation was required, as all that is needed is to delete the spouse,drag the child to a position below its father and then resize the family line to a single point. If you look closely you will see grey dots that are the remnants of family lines.

The problem is that if you then auto-arrange it looks ridiculous because it restores the lines to their original size instead of just leaving the single vertical line between parent and child.

I would say it is more of a limitation than a problem, once you start to manually adjust layout then I believe it is unreasonable to expect auto-arrange to cope. Auto arrange has been discussed at length in this forum and I think it is generally accepted that it is of help on import and for the simplest of trees but after that it is down to you. Partial auto arrange of a selection is a great help too.However it would be nice to have better snap features to help align groups of individuals.
