I have seen something similar with movies on XP.  Somehow Windows XP does a preview of a picture/image.  If your metafile is large, it is possible the shell (system) runs out of memory and crashes.  You can de-activate some extensions from the preview, however I don't remember how...

Just started experiencing a problem after exporting a genogram as a metafile to my desktop and when opening it, my entire system flashes on and off uncontollably.  The only way stop this is to delete the metafile.  This never happened before.  Any suggestions?
