Hello:
I'm a total n00b here, having downloaded the program just today, but I like what I see so far. Part of the attraction is the Unicode-ness, which seems rare among the available genealogy programs. Anyway, that feature leads to a question -- in many Slavic languages, as in, I think, Scandinavian ones (at least Icelandic), a brother and sister or even a husband and wife can have surnames that end differently, like -ov and -ova in Russian, for one example. The native speaker recognizes these as "the same". From what I've seen of this program so far, though, it sees them as different, and would consider the two forms as each a unique surname. Is there any way around this?

For the purposes of the Narrative Report, it may be possible to create a list of substitutions of name endings for sorting and grouping of names, so that, using your example, -ova is treated as -ov and so Chekhova is listed under Chekhov. I also found -cka in Polish for -cki at Family name affixesI suggest a Dictionary.xml based list in 'regular expression' pair e.g. <Affixes T="ova$:ov;cka$:cki;"/> means replace ova at the end of a name with ov and replace cka with cki before sorting or grouping. The names will still be displayed in their original form.
It could also be used to group similar name endings such as -schmidt, -schmitt, -schmid, -schmit in German and -vich, -vitz, -vych, -wicz, -witz, -witch in Russian/Polish. Please post any other forms you may be aware of here.

Hello!I tried your suggestion <Affixes T="ova$:ov;cka$:cki;"/> and found that is doesn't work or I used it in a wrong way. Would you please describe the way its working: for example should it be added to the Dictionary.xml or it has to be somehow separate. Is "Affixes T" already defined variable and there are rules of the expression usage? And finally would you please show a little bit more examples of code which you tried and it worked correctly. Do you think that you can take the solutions of the questions like this as future items for implementation as option/tool for the program/report generator? Is it possible upon finishing of solution of these questions to mark them (to mark the post in the forum) as "Will be added to the program/report generator" to be seen by the forum participants (as a feedback) that this option/tool is considered and there is no need to raise the question again? Thank you.

I have received similar questions by emails. At the moment GenoPro does not have a solution. One solution that could be implemented is have a list of surname aliases, and GenoPro would do the sorting/grouping accordingly. This would not require any extra code the report generator, since GenoPro would handle it internally by loading the dictionary of names and performing the proper actions.

Hello, Thank you for the attention to the matter. For the moment I have the list of surnames which is in my genopro database. I use it to combine the masculine and feminine form of surname "FAMILI/FAMILIE (10)". Is there a way of grouping them as "FAMILY" instead of abovementioned by the substitutions? Can you suggest how to do it as you said that GenoPro can handle the list of surnames. Thank you.

I'm not sure if this is a useful suggestion, but how about using the 'family name / maiden name / surname' field for the base form of the surname, and then use the 'alternative name' field for any variation. You could then sort by family name, but display the variant name. Cheers, John

At the time of my post (some 9 months ago) it was only a suggestion for a solution which received no immediate response. Now that there is renewed interest in this feature I will add the 'Affixes' facility to the Narrative Report. I will also provide a configuration parameter BaseNameOnly to allow the Index & Home page surname summary to show only the 'base' or 'root' name. At the moment I anticiapte it being available in say a month's time, but just maybe sooner. A great many of the features in the Narrative Report are developed as a result of suggestions in this forum. I always indicate in the forum when a am prepared to develop new features.

An additional request to the feature development:
Could you please make it easy for English and non-English surnames to be considered equal? Perhaps hyperlinks in the left-column surname list?
For example, in my tree, I have a lot of Greek relatives who have a masculine/feminine surname depending on their gender.
If they were born in Greece, I input their name in Greek as the prime name.
If they emigrated to an English-speaking country or have an "English name" for professional or personal reasons, I list that in the Alias name field.
If they were born in an English-speaking country, the English surname is the prime name, and the Greek name (if any) is listed in the Alias name field.
I show the Greek surnames in all-caps, and the English surnames in mixed case.
Sometimes, I get dozens of entries under the Greek spelling and maybe 1 or 2 under the English surname. Say the surname is Smith in English, and SMHQ in Greek, where S=Sigma, H=Eta, Q=Theta. It would be nice if next to the Smith listing it said "also look at SMHQ", and next to the SMHQ listing, it said "also look at Smith". The surnames would be hyperlinked to jump to the other entries.

Nick K (9/22/2007) Could you please make it easy for English and non-English surnames to be considered equal? Perhaps hyperlinks in the left-column surname list?I have looked into this and I believe it is feasible, but not sraightforward, to add extra entries in the name index for Alternative names, but I'll will work on a solution, since it is quite common for people to be known by different names, even within one country. However it is more difficult to get one entry to point to another in the index, and so this aspect is unikely to be implemented (at least not by me anyway, but others are welcome to try!). In order to generate the multiple entries, one for the main name, and others for each Alternative Name, I need to enforce a structure on the Alternative Name field which it does not have at present. The field can contain multiple alternatives, each either a first names, a last name or both. I therefore propose the following format. Each Alternative name for an individual except the last or only one to be seperated by semi-colon ( and any first and middle names separated from the alternative last name separated by a comma (,) And so for John Smith we could have a Name.Alternative property of Smythe, Jon;Smyth, Johnny; Smithe and four separate entries would appear in the Name index for i) John Smith (Smythe, Jon Paul;Smyth, Johnny; Smithe), ii) Jon Paul Smyth, iii) Johnny Smyth & iv) John Smithe, all linking to the same individual page. Note that the main entry will still show the alternative names as at present. Also note that if an Alternative Name has no first name component then the main first names are assumed (as with the Smithe example) Of course the Alternatives can be in other languages & alphabets. e.g. Σμηθ ?
