I still love this program and still want to make it available to scandinavians. So, guessing that 2007 is a version that will be relatively stable over some time now, is it time to start actually translating the finalized product, or are we still adviced only to create native language skins? I am ready to start making a Swedish version...

Hi Anna! I believe (Dan may confirm?) that at the moment Genopro is working on, besides "hot fixes", also on the French translation of the program and that way pilotting the whole translation project into other languages as well. As soon as they find a suitable way of doing that and have the French version up and running, they will probably let us begin with our own languages. I'm ready to go with the Finnish translation as soon as they are.
So in the meanwhile, it is only the Report Generator that can be affected... but narrative phrases are not that simple to translate into various different languages because of major differences in the grammar. I myself have bumped into many, many problems and though I managed to get some of them solved by getting around somehow, it is rather frustrating because the language is quite "stiff" now and every change in Genopro may result that I have to reconstruct a phrase completely. Damned influctation! :

Rjn (1/14/2007) ... it is rather frustrating because the language is quite "stiff" now and every change in Genopro may result that I have to reconstruct a phrase completely. There is no danger about changes. If we improve the phrase generator, we will add new functionalities or a brand new module. What is working now will be working in the future. Compatibility is vital to us and I am personally committed to make sure we maintain compatibility. Our plans is as follows: 1. Offer an XML interface to translate the menus and dialogs in GenoPro. I will do the French version first as a proof-of-concept. The XML will look very similar as the report generator Dictionary.xml. 2. Have a mechanism to store multiple language dictionaries (DictionaryEN.xml, DictionaryFR.xml, DictionaryFI.xml) in the same skin. This way, you won't have to duplicate the base code nor the graphic images. In the meantime, I recommend having your own skin. We can always merge/pack the dictionaries later into a single skin. 3. Improve the phrase generator for foreign languages. Suggestions are welcome as you go along.

Is there any news on this topic? I hope there hasn't been any severe drawbacks in your pilot translation and these language packs are implemented as soon as possible. You know, I have been in contact with a few finnish Genopro users and I feel that translation of the program itself (menus, dialogs, tooltips) is a long-awaited feature. I cannot stress this more: Old people NEED translation in their mother tongue before they become potential users (and buyers) because very few of them understand English. In addition the web site and help should become international. This is where users including myself may be useful (like for example: Mozilla-project, Skype)...
PS. Someone mentioned Resource Hacker somewhere... I tried it out of curiosity and it seems to work. It is not very effective or legal (reverse-engineering) way so I won't be using it for other than "practising" translation work. But I'm sure people are really anxious to work on this feature.
