I've used WinMerge for a while now to check changes to skin template files. But I recently discovered that now GenoPro uses Zip format WinMerge can compare these files too. The setup is a little tricky so I will go through it here.

You can download WinMerge at http://www.winmerge.org - download and install WinMerge-x.y.z-Setup.exe, where x.y.z is a version number. To compare .gno files you must install WinMerge archive support again from http://www.winmerge.org - download the 7-Zip plugin. You also need the open source 'winzip' clone, 7-zip, from http://www.7-zip.org/. Be sure to download & install the .exe version, not the .msi version. When you run the installer for the WinMerge 7-Zip plugin, e.g. Merge7zInstaller0019-311-444.exe, you are prompted to select the plugins to install. You should select the Merge7zxxx.dll files that correspond to the version of 7-Zip that you have installed. e.g. the current stable release of 7-Zip is 4.42 so you would install Merge7z442.dll & Merge7z442U.dll. I suggest you also select 'Application specific installation' and browse to where WinMerge.exe is installed, usually C:\Program Files\WinMerge\WinMerge.exe. After the install when you first run WinMerge, set the archive support options: i..e Use the Menu Edit / Options , then select Archive Support in list, set the Enable archive support & Detect archive type from signature checkboxes. Also the Use standalone 7-zip if available radio button.

You can then use File / Open to select the two GenoPro .gno files you wish to compare. Winmerge will unpack the files and show the Data.xml file in its folder window and indicate if differences are present. double click on this entry to open the file compare window. You can then browse the differences between the two XML files. You can edit either file in situ and also copy changes from one file to the other. If you are quite familiar with the GenoPro Xml file format you could use this feature to merge GenoPro files. This is NOT for the faint hearted!

WinMerge does not automatically save any changes you make to the XML data. To achieve this, first close the file compare window, WinMerge will prompt to save the changed files into a temporary location so click Ok.

In the WinMerge 'folder view' window, right click on Data.xml and select the Zip option from the context menu item, chose which file, right, left or both, you wish to save.  In the Open File dialogue, select the desired folder and chose 'zip' as the file type. type a filename with a .zip extension and click Save. Then exit WinMerge and rename this saved .zip file to have a .gno extension.
