Ron suggested using 'WinMerge' (see http://sourceforge.net/projects/winmerge/ or http://winmerge.org/ ) to check for the differences from one skin version to the next.

So, you need to reinstall the 2.0.0.1 (or whatever version your translation is based on), generate a new skin to be able to open the skin files in "customized", (preferably renaming the dictionary file to... dict2001.xml or somrething!) then reinstall the 2002 version, get the english dictionary from customized as before, and open both files in Winmerge.

You will now rather nicely see where the changes have occurred and can apply them in your translated skin.

Works wonders, thanks Ron!

I have been changing the Dutch translation now several times due to newer versions becoming available. Most of the times, there are changes to both Dictionary.xml and Config.xml which make it impossible to just copy these files over from a previous version.

If I had the changes between the two versions of the file, it would be a lot easier to incoporate those changes in the old file and hence make upgrading a lot easier.

Would that be possible? Thanks in advance...

rgds,

Ronald

All of us who have started to translate into another language had the same problem. In the beginning I checked on the config.xml file and found it easier to replace the whole file and make my changes, whereas it was much easier to amend the dictionary.xml file with the changes, but not just putting everything down to the end, but in between where it belongs, since everything is sorted by alphabet. I opened both the old and the new dictionary file in the same window (I use Crimson editor) and compare them by scrolling down. I did not have to close those files when creating a test report to see the changes I made.
All other files with a newer date in the new skin replaced the old ones.
Any other changes I made to other files were made after the replacement of files. I kept a separate file recording the changes I made so far in other files.

Since I also understand that you want to group related phrases and words together, you do not add them to the end of the file. However, that makes merging the old and new files quite a big and error-prone task.

I understand.  I have been living the same thing while building the Beta.  We will try to extend our collaboration system to help users share and edit XML files, making it easy to view the differences to merge/update them.  It is our priority to have GenoPro translated into multiple languages, and we will do our best to give adequate tools to make it easy for people to update language files and report templates.  At the moment, I don't have the full solution in mind, however I am confident we can build a solution for this.

Unfortunately, even between 2.001 and 2.002 there were changes to both files. As I can imagine that as soon as you add stuff to the report generator, there will be additional needs for phrases and words, I doubt whether those files (especially the dictionary.xml) will stay the way they are.

Since I also understand that you want to group related phrases and words together, you do not add them to the end of the file. However, that makes merging the old and new files quite a big and error-prone task.

We don't change those file format from version to version, the compatibility have been broken only a few times during the BETA of GenoPro...

The final format of the skin template (included in GenoPro 2007) will remain compatible in the future so you only have to merge it one last time.
