If your tree is hidden, then it won't be indexed because there are no incoming links. On the other hand, once your tree has been indexed by a search engine, then hiding it won't stop the search engine to index new pages. In the later case, you need to set a password to protect your tree.

Thanks for your response. I wonder though if the administrators would be willing to add a robots.txt file to instruct the search engines not to index the site or know if adding the robots.txt would have the desired effect.

Do you think then that you'll implement that feature? Could you report back when it's in place and working?
Thanks in advance
