Hi Dan.

Is there a plan to also translate the Help pages to other languages?

Is there a plan to also translate the Help pages to other languages?

In the short term, we will have a one-page help for each language supported.  This page will include a few screenshots and a brief overview of GenoPro so the user can understand in his/her language what the software is about.  Our strategy is moving away from the online help by including intelligent, context sensitive dynamic rich-tooltip help built-in GenoPro.  Those tips, similar as some computer games, will eliminate the need to look into the manual pages to discover 'hidden features' of the product.  I am personally very excited about this new technology of implementing dynamic help tips.  People will learn quicker and easier how to leverage GenoPro.

As for help pages, our vision is having a collaboration system similar to Wikipedia for all languages.  Of course, we want to reward the contributors, first by recognition of their contribution, and also giving free lifetime upgrades, free accounts to relatives and friends, and the implementation of special features, and of course money for those who contribute something significant.  To maintain quality, we don't tell people we will give money because we cannot verify the work done in a foreign language, however if someone do it by passion, we are delighted to give a financial reward for the work done.

I will be more than happy to assist you with the Hebrew translation.

Will it be in the same language translating tool, that you released in 2.0.0.6?

Your idea of the Wikipedia sounds most interesting. Do you mean that the GenoPro help will be like Wikipedia? Somthing like GenoProWiki? Will it hold information about GenoPro or Genealogy in general?

Yes, it will be another column in the grid, and perhaps another dialog name "Translate Help".  GenoPro will use a combination of the phrase generator and other technologies to generate rich tooltips from the context of the user.  Those tooltips will include icons, hyperlinks and other neat stuff so the user can navigate between help tips.  Those dynamic tooltips will be like customized tutorials.

We like to leverage existing technology.  If we can develop a 'Wiki' for our online help, we will re-use this technology genealogy in general.  Similarly, I plan to adapt the collaboration system for the translation of GenoPro to a collaboration system for family trees.  In the near future, multiple users will be able to collaborate on a family tree.  This collaboration system will also include security, modification history and rollback (undo).

Are you talking about the near future or plans for GenoPro 3.0?

As for the Wikipedia, we created a Genealogy Wiki in Hebrew. I know that you don't read Hebrew, but you can reach it at: http://genewiki.golan-law.co.il/. It has a special section regarding Genealogy software.

First, I need to complete the translation of GenoPro 2007.  There are still several things to translate, including error messages.  I will release an update today which will be a big improvement for those currently translating.

Next, I will work on the collaboration system for sharing family trees.  This collaboration system will be more complex than the translation because of caching of both family tree data and pictures.

As for the online Wiki, this will be developed in parallel by my brother Jean-Claude.  We will write our code from scratch, so it may take a while to develop.  The goal is "do the right thing" and learn from the mistakes of others.  Also, we want to create something useful and integrated to GenoPro.  Probably our first Wiki will be for translating names from one language to another.
