I have a gedcom file that has about 9000 individuals in it, covering over 1000 years. When I import it into Genopro with Autoarrange selected, I get a horrible mess in the centre, with individuals overlapping each other, so it is very hard to manually untangle it and arrange into a readable tree.

If I have autoarrange unselected, I get an alphabetical grid of the individuals, with no displayed links, which is also not very condusive to manually arranging...

Can any one give me any hints as the best way to go about arranging a tree of this size?

In the "Grid" format, select one individual you want to arrange and move him/her to another GenoMap.  Then, use the key V (Move Family to This GenoMap), to bring the whole family to the new GenoMap.  Repeat until you have moved the whole family branch of that individual.

If you open the table of data (Ctrl+T) you can sort on name and date of birth (or baptism) and choose someone from the top of the tree.
