Maybe a better description of this and some examples of when to use and when not to use would be good for everyone. The current explanation may be OK for people pretty good with pictures and computers but I don't seem to be able to get it.
Anyway I'll give our situation and would appreciate your help.
I live in Japan and my father in Australia. We want to be able to keep an up to date version of our family tree with either one of us adding or updating information. Adding pictures and stories and new entries etc.. At present Geno Pro doesn't allow this kind of updating between two or more people (as far as I know). So...
We made up the tree and referenced all the pictures to the "F" drive. So the idea is that we can have the GenoPro file on either a USB memory stick or put a copy on our own computers (either seems to work- but we tend to use the file on our computers), but have all the pictures on a USB memory location (at the moment a USB stick; but could be an external hard drive if the number of pictures gets too great) which when plugged in shows up as "F" drive. So all the pictures in the geno pro file are referenced to F drive and the same "Famliy Tree Pics" folder.
Example F:\Family Tree Pics\picture name 1.jpg
So when one of us adds any pictures we send the other the new pics and we add them to the "Family Tree Pics" folder on USB memory stick. (We also keep a second full backup of all pictures somewhere else in case of emergencies like when USB sticks wear) Then we send the genoPro file via the GenoPro server for a full "latest version" of the file. Delete the old file and we have up to date identical family trees and data. It has worked for me pretty well with no problems yet. However on my father's side (he is doing most of the new work at the moment) sometimes the pictures don't show up after he puts them in but they are in the folder and are referenced.
I looked at a few of the pictures and it appears we have a bit of a mix of some checked with "preserve full path" and others not checked. But we can't really work out which it is supposed to be. My end seems to work either way but he has some problems. SO I thought we would change all the pictures to the same "checked" or "unchecked" and then maintain that format before the number of photos gets too great. But which do we use, check it or uncheck it?
Thanks for any help and advise.
We are working on a collaboration module which will address those issues. The pictures will be handled by GenoPro over the Internet. If your father adds a picture, then you will get the update and vice versa. The collaboration module will be as simple to use as saving a file on your disk, except the 'master copy' will be stored on our server. The collaboration module will have security where only the people you invite are allowed to view and/or edit the family tree.
