Personally I would also prefer to see the existing family 'relation' values transfered to the Union type so that for example engagement and casual affairs can also have a start and end date. In this way the history of a relationship can be more fully documented. With the relation currently 'fixed' to a family line it can only represent a point in time.

This is a great suggestion.  I like the idea.

Perhaps the existing Separation/Divorce panel for a Union should be extended to cover widowhood or other termination. It would need additional fields for type of termination (separation, divorce, widowed etc.) and a drop down field to select which of the partners 'instigated' the termination, e.g. by starting divorce proceeding, death, etc.

Personally I would also prefer to see the existing family 'relation' values transfered to the Union type so that for example engagement and casual affairs can also have a start and end date. I find in many reports from different genealogy programs the wording in
PhFamilyWith T="{3}{0} [{1} ]family with {2}" G1="F"
the inclusion of the word "widow(er)" if it is the 2nd or 3rd or even 4th marriage due to passing away of the partners.
I do not know in other languages, but in German this is very popular.
But this requires a new field: "passed away before partner(1,2,3,..", since not always birth and death dates are available.
