I'd like to see several improvements made to the SVG views:

  • Grid Markers: I'd like reference letters/numbers to appear along the top/bottom and left/right edges similar to a city map.  So if it says you can find John Smith on Genomap Smith A14, you can look at that Genomap at location A14 and find him.  Right now, it is too difficult to look all over the map for a particular name.
  • Reference Tags: A lot of my genomaps have multiple links to other genomaps (eg. two sisters marrying two brothers or cousins from another family/genomap).  It is very difficult to find the names on the SVG output, and even harder on a hardcopy ... the only time it is easy is when you have the Genopro application itself.  What I'd like is a "Tag" next to any hyperlinked names saying look at "Genomap location Xn".  This would be implemented along with the Grid Markers above.  This way it would be much faster to find people using the SVG view and hardcopies.
  • Fixed Legend: Right now, you can insert a Legend by clicking on a few drop down menus.  But inserting a Legend adds a bunch of unnecessary people to your tree, and even more if you insert a Legend on each genomap.  I realize these Legends are great in their flexibility .. you can edit them, put them where you want them, etc.  I would prefer a Legend like the one that appears in say MSProject.  You decide on whether you want it on every page, none, or front page, and the location (top, bottom, left, right, etc) and that's that.  The items don't appear in any of your reports or tables.
  • Larger Fonts:  I'd like larger fonts to be made available for the Labels.  Right now, I think there are 5? sizes available.  When I print the trees up on 3' x 4' plotter paper, the Extra Large font Labels are barely visible.  It would be nice if you could specify front sizes as in MSPowerPoint like 44 or 60 so the labels can be read across the room.

Thanks for the suggestions Nick. Having considered these I offer the following proposals and alternative suggestions.

Nick K (10/20/2008)

  • Grid Markers: I'd like reference letters/numbers to appear along the top/bottom and left/right edges similar to a city map.  So if it says you can find John Smith on Genomap Smith A14, you can look at that Genomap at location A14 and find him.  Right now, it is too difficult to look all over the map for a particular name.

Very nice idea but is quite complicated to implement. Currently you can locate an individual or family quicky by clicking the  icon on his/her/their details page. You will need to look up the name in the index first. So perhap the  icon should also appear against the name in the index. I will see if I can implement this.

Also with the Adobe ASV and with PDF genomaps you can use a text search on the genomap to find a name Simply right click and choose find or search respectively.

You can click the hyperlink (i.e. the name) on the SVG genomap to follow the link and so additional tag is required, but perhaps a 'data tip' popup could be used. For hard-copy, in the past I have added text labels to the Genomap with arrows to indicate the destinatrion of such links. It is not really practical to automatically add extra detail to a Genomap as new details may overlay existing objects.

A tricky one this. One idea I have is to allow a user to specify a .png file containing the required legend (created by first creating a standard GenoPro legend, grabbing the screen image and converting to .png using say IrfanView). I could then provide a buton to toggle the display this .png legend over the SVG. . As for hardcopy then ideally something neds to be built into GenoPro itself, and I cannot speak for GenoPro Inc., but failing that then it is relatively straightforward to take an SVG GenoMap image and edit with Inkscape to add a legend, e.g. the .png file mentioned above, before printing.

Again ideally this needs to be built into GenoPro itself. A work-around would be to again use Inkscape and the SVG Genomap image and enlarge the Labels as required before printing.

GenoPro needs to redesign the architecture to manage fonts.  At the moment, the entire family tree is displayed using the same font, and with only five sizes (Tiny, Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large).

Can SVG support external hyperlinks that open a new window, say, to a website containing related genealogy.

Yes SVG does support external links (anchor <a> tag with xlink:href attribute) and so do the SVG genomaps of the Narrative Report. e.g. use hyperlink tab of Individual Properties dialogue to create an external link. Then in the Narrative Report you should be able to click on the name of the individual to open the external link. This works for both Firefox and Google Chrome but for some reason the Adobe SVG viewer will only open links in the same website.  Internal links are also used to link from the SVG to individual and family pages and also full size images of any embedded pictures.
