You have not said how the link was created but I suspect you created a source with a title of http://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz This is treated just as any other title for a source and will link to the HTML page for that source in the report. You should enter the link in the 'Source File or URL' field of the source record properties in order that it works as a real external link in the report.

In HTML links have a displayed title or text and an underlying address or URL just as an email adress can have a display name as well as the actual address. Often if no displayable title is given in an HTML link then the URL string itself is used instead, but the displayable text can be misleading as in your case where the text is set to look like a valid URL. It does not necessarily match the underlying address. This 'trick' is sometimes used to entice users to a site they would not normally visit and can lead to viruses and other 'malware'.
