Hey all,

OK. I'm starting to delve deeper into GenoPro - BEST geneological program EVAR!!

I am looking closely now at Places and Locations. I'm trying to clean up what I have. I have several places that are the same, but not. I have figured out "Consolidate". That's very useful. I get "Street Address", "County/Region", "City", "State/Province" , "Zip/Postal Code", and so on. As well as "Place Category".

But I am very confused by the other options in the table layout. Things like "Parent", and "Children Places". And why doesn't "Full Address" include the "Place Name"?? And by separating the address out like this, will it read fully in the Narrative Report?? I want places (like hospitals, cemeteries, churches, and cities) to always be the full place name (if available, of course) - place, city, county, province, country (I'm Canadian, none of that Sate stuff Smile). With the exception of the actual street address - that should only be visible when looking at the Place's detail entry from the "Place Index".

So, how does this all work?? I read the help page about Places... But I guess I'm not getting the hierarchical thing. I mean, I know what that means, but not in this context. Thanks.

Use a separate hierachical place for each of your place, city, county, province, country and put only the street address on the place (with zipcode?), only the city name in the address of the city place and so on. In the Configuration Parameters of the Narrative Report, set the 'Presentation Settings' option to cocatenate hierachical place names.

Note that parent place properties get propagated to their children, grand children etc., so setting the 'city' address item in your 'city' place causes it to be shown on all child places of that city. Hierachical places save typing and make it easier to see grouping of your ancestors.

The address information is also used for the Google Map lookup if no coordinates have been provided.

Thanks Ron. I played around with this and figured out the whole hierarchical thing. Mostly. Smile And now, with the Presentation Setting change (I really need to learn all there is with all the possible settings), I have the places displaying the way I like them. Again, thank you. BigGrin:

The only real hassle is in creating the hierarchical places. I was fiddling around in the table layout, and found a little annoying "glitch". Unless the place has been entered on an individual, you can't do anything. You can NOT create a place in table layout. This is a hassle when you have all the info in front of you. I have created an individual that has no other data other than a place of birth. I use this to enter new places so I can use them to work/create the hierarchical places structure. And then, you need to close table layout, and open it again for the new place to appear. That gets very tiring after a while.

The issue of places needing to be 'unique' can be troublesome as well. I have a person that is from Québec, Québec, Canada. The city and province have the same name. Like NY, NY. I had to change the city to Québec City to get it to work. But that is incorrect. While I agree, places need to have a certain 'uniqueness', this can cause issues of having to enter incorrect info.. I know it's wrong, and can live with it, but when it's shared, or passed on for later generations (hopefully)... To me, if you have a different parent/category element, that makes the same name place 'unique'. So, how does that work for other places that have the same name??

Consolidating places is a bit of a pain too. Unless, like many other things, I am missing the obvious solution. Smile I created a hierarchical place, and found that there were several others that should be the same. Which one do I select first?? I tried several ways, and there seemed to be no consistent outcome. I would select the "right" one, and then all the others that needed changing - Consolidate! WTF?? Oops!! That didn't work. Undo. Select the "wrong" ones, and then the one that it needs changing too - Consolidate! WTF?? Oops!! That didn't work. Undo. Ugh!! Unsure

Can anyone tell me how to mark them by race and how to place a legend?  I am doing this as an assignment for Counseling in a Masters program and yet it is not to be problem-focused, I am afraid I am adding too much of what I see, and not enough of what the instructor is wanting, such as the "weak one, sick one, successful one, failure, warm, caring, reactions to child birth?...."  I do not see any of these types of selections.  This is the first I have ever heard of anything called a Genogram, needless to say, I am lost.
