I have to add a illegitimate child to a mother, who now has a husband and children by him.  How do I show a child produced before this marriage, one with a father inknown?

GenoPro is a drawing software, there you can have very complex senario explained. I'm not sure to understand all your case but here is a sample a child getting adopted. If the mother of the "illegitmate children" is the same, check for multiple marriage sample.

I prefer to place Family1 and Mum1 and Family 2 on different Genomaps using a hyperlink to place the Child1 on each. It will create a circular reference that will automatically refer to the next family on each click of the Child1. It also clearly separates the three entities to which the child belongs.

Since there is no mention of adoption and the father was unknown I would go for something like this:

'lego audio video erro ergo disco' or "I read, I listen, I watch, I make mistakes, therefore I learn"

Absolutly Ron, but in my point of view an unknown father is still a father, we just don't know the name. I think that most of the time both parent should be display.

If the father have been research and nothing is found that should be document in the family, so if someone pick up the graph know that it's not just an incomplete family tree.

The good news is that you can pick the solution that fit the best for you!

While the idea of showing the father is sensible when there is only one illegitimate child, when there are five or six it starts getting a bit cluttered as you really have to show a different father for each one as there is no guarantee that all the children are by the same father.

I tend to use Ron's approach for that reason, but it all depends on the person building the tree and what they are interested in. As mentioned - Genopro allows you to apply whatever approach you want.
