I have a workbook with three worksheets in it for different branches linking to the overall family tree.

The problem I am having is that I can't seem to move the objects, and when I try to update marriages etc. the OK button is grayed out and the data just simply will not update. My thought is that I may have locked the file somehow and I don't recall how I did that. The edit tab will show a green check mark or a padlock icon. I presume the padlock icon means the worksheet is protected and the green check mark is unprotected. Either way, I can't seem to edit the data, so, what else is going on?

Thanks for any help. I hope this generates a return email with a solution or at least something to tell me where I can find the answer.

Update: I was able to get the workbook to work. I don't know how I did it, but it works. No file was locked on the harddrive, so it had to have been something in the workbook itself. I do have another question, posted in another note soon to be written about how to automatically update across workbooks, if that is at all possible. Please read and respond if you can. Thanks

It sounds as if the file has been set as Read-only. This can happen if it was copied to a Cd and then retrieved. Also if it is on a network you may not be allowed to change things.
Use Windows Explorer to find the file and check the Properties page. (Right click on the name to open the menu - Properties at bottom)

Hi Jim, Glad to see you sorted your problem. I think the padlock icon is just a symbol to indicate the purpose of the menu item, i.e. to 'read-only' protect the data in the .gno file. The green tick mark indicates that the read-only protection is applied and just a padlock means it is not. If the file had been protected by the operating system the problem would be seen when trying to save the file and not when trying to update a property sheet.

And just a hint, once someone hasd responded to your post, it is better to add another reply yourself rather than update your earlier post. This way the reply gets flagged as a new post and therefore is much more visible to others such as myself monitoring 'Recent Posts'
