Hello there,

last week I downloaded Genopro 2011. Thank you very much for the upgrade!
I noticed that it hangs from time to time (I'm running Windows 7), not related to
a specific command, but when it's idle. Even after a long wait it does not come back
but has to be killed and re-started.

Thank you,
Rainer

Is this phenomenon new to version 2.5.3.4, or you had occasional hangs on previous versions of GenoPro?  Does GenoPro also hangs on an empty document, or a document with pictures?

One method to find out is to install GenoPro 2007 (http://www.genopro.com/download/InstallGenoPro2007.exe in a different folder) and let GenoPro 2007 run idle in the background and see if GenoPro 2007 hangs.  I am curious to see why GenoPro hangs on your machine.

I personally use Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and never had a single hang.  We also have thousand of users with Windows 7 and, so far, nobody reported this problem.

Cheers!

This phenomenon is new, the version before (still 2007, I think) did not hang. It hangs in a document with
pictures.

I will try letting it sit idle in another document without pictures and report what happens.

Best,
Rainer

I let Genopro sit idle for some hours, this time it did not hang, but doesn't display images any longer when showing
a person's properties. It just shows a grey rectangle. Exiting the program, re-opening it and displaying the
same person's properties again shows the image. Strange ...

Best, Rainer

I've been running into a similar problem since upgrading to 2011.  I had been using 2007 for years with no problems, but now after upgrading to 2011, it will occasionally hang.  I haven't nailed down a specific action that causes it, but I have noticed a peculiar symptom that predicates the problem:  All of the birth/death years above the genogram symbols suddenly shift downward slightly and are partially obscured by the genogram.  Some even drop below the genogram.  I have attached images to show you.

Normal:

Error:

After this happens, I usually hang when trying to save and I have to kill the process.  This means I lose all unsaved works, which means I have to Ctrl+S after every single update, which is annoying.  I also noticed gray boxes for some of the pictures I had added to sources.  This didn't happen for the first few days as I used 2011, but just started happening today, and has happened a bunch of times.

Hummm... I changed something in the display so GenoPro can display the text in a consistent manner regardless of the zoom.

I suspect this bug is related to http://support.genopro.com/FindPost26369.aspx (Depending on the zoom or when I am printing, the text layout is different and the end of lines being trimmed off)

This is also related to http://support.genopro.com/FindPost6179.aspx (pixel quantization)

The good news is I was able to reproduce this bug on my machine and I fixed it.  I am doing more testing, including printing tests on different platforms and screen resolutions & color depth.

The bug was related with a change in color depth causing the global display context to become invalid.  Since this global display context was used to measure the dimensions (width and height) of text before drawing to the screen, some of the text was displayed at the wrong location.  Other text was displayed properly because of data caching.

Of course, using an invalid display context would be enough to hang GenoPro.

I want to include a few more fixes and plan to release an update soon.  The fix for this bug will be available for download with version 2.5.3.6.

The update is finally available.  If you do a Check for Updates, you will get the fix.  This bug was probably occurring after a screensaver would run or playing a game.  Let me know if you find anything suspicious regarding the display and/or some pictures do not display.

Haven't had the problem since I updated.  Hooray!

However, this evening, I swear it was within 10 seconds of thinking "I should post back to the thread saying the problem hasn't happened," I ran into another display issue that prevented me from saving.  I'll post a new thread for it.
