Possibly there is something I have missed here.


Yes I did miss something. Firstly the page width is being set to a large value because the pages are forcibly displayed within a frameset. This is done so that if someone finds say an individual page via Google then rather than displaying just that page it gets displayed within the usual framset with the heading and title and indexes - but this seems to confuse Acrobat.  I will add a Config Parameter to optionally turn this off. Secondly I can add CSS styling for print media. Initially I will add a Config Parameter to control page width when printing. I think this will be generally useful not just for the PDF conversion.

I will post again when I have the new version of the Narrative Report skin ready. There are a few other tweaks I am making first.

Soahs, for future reference you can edit Config.xml with a simple text editor such as NotePad.  However this will not be necessary once the revised skin is ready as all changes can then be made via the Configuration Parameters dialog when generating the report.

Revision 2011.05.29 of the Narrative Report skin (see Latest 'English Narrative Report' skin  ) has the changes to improve conversion to PDF using Acrobat Pro. This is achieved by Configuration Parameters to set a print page width in CSS and an option to prevent single pages from being forcibly displayed in a frameset.  As previosuly mentioned auto hide should be set for indexes, genomaps, timeline, Google Maps and calendar should be turned off and indexes should be always expanded.

The first page (home page) still has a width issue but the remainder of the report seems to convert correctly.


I wonder if Acrobat 9 Pro will now work happily with this version?

I have attached the Acrobat X Pro conversion of Harry Potter  using this latest skin.

After a little more testing I found my suggestion of a print page width is a red herring i.e. not required. Also perhaps setting the index to auto-hide is probably not required. I now think it is only necessary to ensure pages are not forced into a frameset and to expand everything.  Another trick is to point Acrobat Pro at the heading.htm page rather than the directory/folder or default.htm. this avoids Acrobat trying to convert the initial frameset. 

Another example attached.

At £149 for Acrobat 9 Pro and around £299 for Acrobat X Pro this is not a very affordable solution for most of us.  I'll search around and see if anything else can do something similar. Suggestions welcome. Maybe someone can offer Acrobat Pro conversion as a chargeable service?
