Hi,
I just started drafting a new tool which would allow to merge individuals (only individuals to start with) that are located on the same or on different genomaps in either the same or different genograms (hope you can still follow). Prototyping would be starting around mid-january after I finish my current project for the National Archives.
Development would be done in VB6 (yes, I know) which has close to no support for UTF-8. Anyhow, I cannot afford to buy another development environment like .NET or Delphi. But for prototyping this should be OK. Supported character sets will be Latin only, i'm afraid.
You could help me by sending me some of your cases which I could use for test purposes.
Enjoy the last days of the old year and all the very best for the new one to come.
Regards, Nand

Hi! I can help with my two files, but maybe the problem is too difficult for your program The two trees are more less of the same tree family, but are maked by different author.

Wow, there's is life after all on this planet.
Until now I did not receive a single reaction on my initial posting, so my project ended up in the bottom drawer.
Thanks for your input Tonino, but please remember that merging whole trees was in fact the last step in the development process. I'll have a look at it anyhow and let you know how it turns out.
Regards, Nand

Tonino,
Tree1 contains a father "Walter Hill Jr." and his son "John Hill Sr." both born in 1693.
Was this on purpose or just to test me?
Nand.

Time for a progress report. I changed the sub title of the base post accordingly.
Version 1 is under way. I finished the selection of GenoMaps, GenoGrams and Individuals.
Right now I'm working on sorting and filtering options to assist in identifying individuals.
Keep in mind that version 1 will only allow to select, compare and merge two individuals. This was the functionality I needed most myself. Merging of families and trees is still far away.
I'll post a reply when I have something for you to test.

I recently had a hard disc problem and so had to start using one of my backups again. I save them regularly and add a date to the filename. Unfortunately I started using an older version where I made additions. Then realised the newer version had some different data. Decided to export to xml and use Winmerge to identify differences. It worked fine to start with but suddenly things are out of sequence, so I will just use it to identify changes. A Genomerge comparison would be useful here. If you want additional test data I can send it

Additional data is always welcome. Especially the case you mention where different versions of the same trees are involved.
Could you try to send your data via a personal message?
For what concerns the tool, progress is slow. I can only work on it during my spare time but I hope to have a first version ready in two or three weeks.

I believe I have a prototype running ... It contains the basic stuff I needed for my own merge operations.
Primary purpose of this release is to evaluation its look and feel. Constructive feedback is always welcome.
You can get it for free from the usual place http://www.floating-point.net/ancestry/genopro/ Look in the table for the entry about "FPS GenoMerge 0.4".
The program is packaged in a ZIP kit which also contains a simple user's guide in PDF. Please read the documentation before starting to ask questions here.
Enjoy, Nand

With W7, I installed MSHFLXGD.OCX as instructed. Then I also had to install comdlg32.ocx, because missing in W7.
Now it all works. I think it's useful to update records in a file, with data from another file that contains the same record, only most up to date. I would prefer a mask in full screen, divided vertically into 2 parts, with two parallel lists ("master" and "merge"). It seems easier to compare records I did a few tests, and it works.
This topic was started over a year ago (in another topic), for a different problem: that is, in the same genogram, identify and select two individuals equal or nearly so, in the same or in different Genomaps, and create an internal link between them, unifying all the data of the two records.
However, also this function is useful for comparison and updating between different files.
Thank you for your work.

Version 1.0 just got released.
The most important change resides in the addition of a [Suggest] command button which activates the “Find Next Compare Candidate Pair” function intended to assist the user in finding two individuals that may be interesting being compared. This function is most useful when comparing two different versions of the same GenoGram.
Also, the sorts on parent and mother names have been replaced with two new sort mechanisms.
More information in the User's Guide.
