When I enter a source, there is no option in the dropdown menu for New Parent Source. Somehow by magic, if I make a source without a parent source, then one I've made might come up in the parent source menu. Is there an easier way?

It can be slightly complicated to get the parent source in place. You can not add it on the New Place edit menu.
As an example on the birth template you need to add the parent place first and then OK to save it. Then come back and change the place to the correct name; press Ctrl+E to get to the next menu where you will now find the parent place in the list

Thanks. I will keep muddling along, correcting and fiddling. I'll try the Ctrl - E too.
