I don't know whether this was the intention, but I find the 'Select...Tree' function very useful if I want to move an individual and their descendents or ancestors including their families to a new Genomap.

"Select Direct ..." was always very intuitive. I was just experimenting with "Select ... Tree" again, on a less-tangled section of the genogram, and that does seem to be the case, for both ancestors and descendants. "Select ... Tree" still (to me, at least) very counter-intuitive, and far less useful than a simple selection of all direct descendants (or ancestors) and their spouses (considering that if there are multiple marriages involved, the spouse of an ancestor may not necessarily also be an ancestor).

I'm curious as to the thoughts behind having these commands work the way they do, largely because for my purposes (I can't speak for anyone else), they seem to be rather useless for anything except determining numbers of individuals selected (which isn't given, because GenoPro tells you how many objects are selected; you have to go to list view and count the selected individuals manually, because even in list view, it still reports the total number of individuals in the tree, not the number of individuals selected). Something more for the next-release wish list... if there ever is a new release... Sad

Here's my understanding on the select processes:

Select Direct Descendents: selects all children, grandchildren, and so on of the selected individual, does not select any spouses. ie only selects 'blood' descendents.

Select Descendent Tree: selects all children, grandchildren, and so on of the selected individual and their spouses with their families, including ancestors and siblings. Does not select the spouse (nor his/her family) of the selected individual, nor that individual's siblings or ancestors.

The Ancestor selections work in a similar manner.

This is something that has bugged me for a long time. The way I expect "Select Descendant Tree" to work, it should select all direct descendants and their partners (thereby distinguishing it from "Select Direct Descendants"). Instead, it selects descendants, ancestors, and just about everybody in the tree, based on no apparent algorithm I can follow... but then, my genograms are large and complex. Can anybody explain how this function works, and why? Thanks!
