Through trial and error, I was just now able to display "1300 fl." by entering this in the Date of Birth field. GenoPro flags it as an error and it's not the correct way around (it won't display "fl. 1300") but it will achieve what I wanted.

Not sure how the Report Generator would react to that though?

Hopefully, the new GenoPro, in whatever decade it might be released, will be a bit more flexible!

My choice would be to use both > and <, so say <1300 for birth and >1300 for death, surely this fixes the individual's presence on the planet in 1300?
Maybe I should change approximate date characters in Dictionary.xml to use ≤ for < and ≥ instead of >, so ≤1300 says 'born in or before the year 1300'

I tried combining < with ~ but only one is displayed.
If you do have one date then it has to be <

I do use <, > and ~ when I know an approximate date of birth or death, but in this case, I don't know either.

For example, the only information I know about an individual is that he was alive in a particular year as his name is mentioned in a deed document. I would like to display that year, prefixed by a character, so I know the period he lived in at a glance.

Like you, I did try a few other prefixes but frustratingly they disappear on display.

You are not limited to numbers in the birth field. Where only a baptism is known I prefix the birth date with <.
Similarly the age in a census record can be prefixed ~
Not sure if you could use anything else. A trial just ignored @ or ?

I have a number of individuals in my tree, mostly ancient, of whom I have no knowledge regarding their dates of birth, baptism or death. I am looking for suggestions on how to denote a date or year when a person was alive or active, for example as being mentioned in a document or record.

There is an abbreviation for recording this in historical documents: "fl." floruit in Latin or "flourished", which would be perfect. Ideally, I would like to display this in the Top Label field above the Gender Symbol where other dates are normally shown, e.g. fl.1300, meaning there is recorded proof of the individual being alive in the year 1300. Unfortunately, GenoPro does not allow this abbreviation in the date fields so I end up with just "1300" which is not appropriate.

I was wondering if anyone has been able to overcome this situation and how they went about it.

Bob
