First and foremost, it makes no sense to have a ten-by-ten grid when ancestry goes up as powers of two. 

I have been asking for an improvement to the grid for over 20 years and all we can do is have it on, or off.

Default spacing of new entries would be better if they conformed to this pattern as well. I always have to change both the spacing and position of each and every new entry

As well as this - and especially when working with large trees - some variation of grid lines in colour and thickness would help with navigation. When you have 17 brothers and sisters is it difficult to keep them all on the same line when you can only see a fraction of their families.

Think of graph paper where every 5th line is a bit thicker and every 10th thicker still. 

I can (and do) add lines of my own of any colour and thickness but they get picked up and moved when I select anything near them so they are only really useful to improve the presentation and readability of complete trees - as if there is ever such a thing as a complete tree!
