So looking at this:  http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k180/irvdk/Question.jpg   It seems to be the best way to proceed for me.  Is there anything that I need to watch out for using this format?

That is how I would have recorded the family, although as you have seen, others do it differently. Are you using the 'Second Last Name' and 'Alternative Names' for different purposes? If they are both recording the husband's name it is probably best to be consistent in use.

Glad to have been of help.

"However, GenoPro is flexible, and you can use the various name fields as you wish (as the other replies to this thread indicate). But you also have to consider any female children - if she marries and takes her husband's Last Name and you change her Last Name to show this, she will no longer be listed under her father's Last Name (as in your example).

Thank you all for the help.

When you do the report the wife is not listed as mother of the children in the left pane of the report.  She could be at the top or at the bottom of the list depending on her last name (A-Z).

Am I correct on this?

Please see the correction to my earlier post.

Yes, you are correct; but equally the father is not listed as the father of his children in the left-hand pane. It is not until you click on an individual that the details of that individual's family are shown - in the right-hand pane (including the details of the spouse). The Family Index shows the husband and wife together. (In the example you gave earlier the wife would be listed under 'Syncavitch Steinman' and the husband under 'Steinman'.)

However, GenoPro is flexible, and you can use the various name fields as you wish (as the other replies to this thread indicate). But you also have to consider any female children - if she marries and takes her husband's Last Name and you change her Last Name to show this, she will no longer be listed under her father's Last Name (as in your example).

As others have indicated, it is preferred to record the blood line (ie maiden names), and either not record the married name under that individual or use a different field.

I only place the Maiden name of the wife.  I do not include the married name anywhere in the woman's attributes, unless her last name was changed to something other than her husband's.  It is obvious from the graphic as well as text that this particular woman married such and such person (perhaps remarried as well).

The children typically receive the surname (family name) from their father.

So as I understand it, the most common way is to put a womens married name in the 'Alternative Name Field'.

That seems very confusing to me as when I think of a branch of a tree I think of it as:

Husband (blood line)

Wife

Children

The way you are presenting it is:

Husband (blood line)

Children

When you do the report the wife is not listed as mother of the children in the left pane of the report.  She could be at the top or at the bottom of the list depending on her last name (A-Z).

Am I correct on this?

Thanks, Irv

So tell me then is this the proper way to fill them out?

Many users put the husband's name under the 'Alternative Names' field, just leaving the Maiden Name in the 'Family Name / Maiden Name / Surname' field.

Correction (3 Jan) -  I should have referred to 'Second Last Name' field, not 'Alternative Names'.

I would leave out the husband's surname altogether. This seems to be the most common way of doing it.  If you leave it the way you have it in your example (assuming that "Steinman" is her husband's name), what would you do if she married again?  I have one female who married three times!

I agree with Poolzone.  Maiden Names should appear.

Then am I doing it the correct way according to my attachment?
