Hi,  I left genopro looking for something better and and now I realize this is the best software out there for what I want.  My problem before was that I could not get the genogram to display properly on my family's website.  Since then I have a completely new computer as my hard drive crashed and burned but I saved my information on a floppy.  I went to install again and realized these new computers no longer have a floppy so I'm looking for an external drive.  Anyway, which version should I download at this point that has all the report generator bugs worked out. Wink

Thanks

A possible reason that the web site would not display a genogram is that you need to use MS IExplorer as the browser and also download a copy of GenoPro onto the viewing PC. Other browsers will not give the ability to jump from the Genogram back into the web detail page. They need to support ActiveX.

Early versions of Beta2 did not have a report writer, so you had to use 1.9. This has now changed and the latest version does support web pages with links to a genogram. I would recommend using the latest version from

Ok, I downloaded the latest version for 30 days, thanks.   Now once the report is on my website, will my family have to download the software in order to see the genogram?

Only if they want to see and modify the gno.

Another option is to make a picture with your genogram (in version 1.91-1.99 Tools- export Metafile, in the Beta no direct option)

If you want to see the genogram you need GenoPro on the PC that is being used. You can download a copy of the program, which allows you to modify the basic data for 30 days. After that period it can only be used to look at the genogram and make prints. This is not time limited, so anybody in future will be able to see your work.

If you are serious about using GenoPro someone will eventually have to buy a copy to carry on development. Note that Dan has said that the 30 days will be extended to another period of 30 days when the next update is issued. This means that you should have until the end of the year to decide if you want to continue.

This Export to Metafile has been moved to the File menu (Menu -> File -> Export -> Metafile).  You can also copy & paste the genogram directly via the clipboard.

This is true.  If you download & install Beta14 after Beta14b you will get a new 30-day evaluation key.  You can also install GenoPro 1.99b to get an additional key.  If you download GenoPro 1.99 from Download.com, you will get another key. Beta 15 coming in October will give you another new 30-day evaluation key too.

Ultimately I'd like for my family to be able to add their information ie children, grandchildren and so forth which is why I love this software so much.  It allows the family to keep the chart growing with the family.   I had already purchased what I believe is version 1.91 although no where either on the cover or the cd itself does it say what version it is.  I purchased from a CompUsa for less than $6.  Do I need to buy the $39.99 version to continue using the version I've just downloaded after the 30 days?  I have to tell you, whomever said this was stuff is easy must have been Hehe because when you start talking about inserting this code and that code, you lose alot of folks.  This is not easy and I am really terrified about starting over again.  But,  I've tried the rest and I believe this is the best.

If you want to check which version you are using, go the Help on the top menu. Dan gave information about the CompUSA deal with GenoPro.

I started with GenoPro 1.9 and was very happy with it until version 2 started to appear as Beta and think the upgrade is tremendous. Compared to 1.9 the major differences are the ability to separate displays on to different sheets (GenoMaps), much more information can be recorded (eg baptism as well as birth records) and an improved graphical ability with colour, shapes and text.

I can see why you want the family to extend the work themselves. This can lead to problems when you want to add the new data to yours. One way round this is to ask others to put all their new data on a different GenoMap so you can see what has been done. This does mean using version 2.

Finally you probably realise that it is possible to run both versions 1.9 and 2. Any data created in version 2 is saved in two files. The basic .gno file can not be read by 1.9 but an extra file is saved, without the extra information, and this can be used by 1.9. Version 2 will of course read the earlier files

If you have purchased GenoPro from CompUSA or another retail store, I recommend to upgrade to version 2.b13h.  This version is free and you will benefit many features.  You may go with the newest betas, such as Beta14b, however you need a key.

In any regards, there is no danger to loose any information.  I know how much time people put building their family tree and how important their genealogy data is for them.  GenoPro Beta stores your genealogy data into 3 separate files, each using a different technology, just in case something goes wrong.  GenoPro Beta has been available for more than two years Blush, without a single case of data loss due to file corruption or bug in GenoPro.  By the way, I get several emails each week of people having lost their entire hard disk because of hardware failure.  Don't forget to do backups on a remote disk.
