Hi there,

My father has recently downloaded the beta-version and is busy with his tree as we speak...

On his behalf, I want to ask: what's the best way 'in' to GenoPro in order to get the best out of it.

i.e.
I believe the free download of the beta version is restricted to 30 days + limited family tree size.

Therefore is it best for him to now register and pay for a full version?
Will the eventual release of the beta be version 2.0?

Will this entitle him to free releases, upgrades, versions etc?
(Presumably, this will take away the restrictions in the free version)

In other words: what is recommended for a new user?

Sorry to ask such basic questions but I'm sure you can answer this very easily!

Thanks!

For new user the best thing is to try the software, and if he likes it buy it...

If he really likes this software, the best he can do is to buy it and support it's further development.

He gets full support with technical issues, and upgrade to version 2.0 (when it's done, and it should be out soon), and as stated in this authors post all 2.x versions.

...buying it removes any restrictions of program implemented in trial version (with trial key).

So far with each upgrade of beta version, you get another 30 days of trial period, but it won't go indefinately... There are just few beta version until release of 2.0

Thanks - that was I was hoping for...

He's tried it, he likes it so is now ready to buy/support it as you suggested.

Am I right in thinking that, apart from a payment and a keycode, nothing actually changes hands?
i.e. there is no product (a box, a disc or a manual etc.) and all of the documentation & help etc. is included within the program.

Thanks again!

When you purchase GenoPro you are sent a key-code that unlocks your software and removes all restrictions.
Points to watch for are that there are two versions (same price). v1.99 is the full version of the earlier software, which is compatible with version 2, which is still in Beta format. The latter has many advantages and is as easy to use as version 1. The only caveat is that being a Beta version, the help files have not been updated and still point to the Help as written for the earlier version. However it is better to start with Beta2.
The v.1 Help is still appropriate in most cases but obviously does not cover (yet) the new features such as GenoMaps. Most of it is easy to get hold of if you are used to a PC. However this help forum will have covered many of the new features, and if in doubt post a request. The Report Generator has also changed a great deal and may be less helpful than this forum - although I have not checked this help page recently. In any case the Report Generation only becomes relevant after you have entered a lot of data and want to see the results.

Ah, I see.

Sounds like the beta version is still the one to go for...

Does the same keycode unlock both 1.99 & the beta?
Or do you need to specify which product you're buying when you register & pay?

Continued thanks...

Yes

Or do you need to specify which product you're buying when you register & pay?

in theory your keycode is valid for the next 5 years, no matter what version will be....

Thanks for replying to this guys.

Purchasing GenoPro gives you a keycode that works on both 1.99 and/or the beta.  It is up to you to pick which version you like best.  I believe most users on this forum prefer the beta.

Your keycode allows you to use GenoPro forever, and free upgrades of version 2.x.  In the past there was a 5 year upgrade because the shipping date of GenoPro 2.0 was unknown.  GenoPro 2.0 will ship in 2006, probably in January.

I believe the free download of the beta version is restricted to 30 days + limited family tree size.

I would rather say "the free download of the beta version is restricted to 30 days, or limited to 25 individuals if used without a key".  The evaluation key gives you full access to all features of GenoPro without restrictions for 30 days.  Each Beta gives you a new key, so if you download 2.b14, 2.b14b or 2.b15, you will get a new key.  Beta15b (coming this month) will give you another 30-day evaluation key.
