I at present use the free space provided by my ISP (Wanadoo) but if I want to change ISP I will lose the URL for my tree and will have to notify all the family of the change to a new website. In effect this discourages the change of ISP (which is perhaps why the ISPs offer the webspace in the first place ) This is why I reserved a domain name for my web site and had to find an appropriate ISP to host it. Not all ISP's accept to host domaine names, but it is still the better solution for me, as even if one does transfer it, the address for the web appears the same as the DNS addresses are not visible. The same thing goes for email addresses as I had the same fixed one for 6 years with a host, even though I changed local ISP at least 4 times, and only changed the address last year because of spam! Many ISP's like "wanadoo" only allow "perso" sites which are incredibly difficult to access in ftp, I know as I tried with a friends site before having it transfered to my ISP and now it is so simple to update . First timers could find Dan's proposal very interesting, but those with already existing sites might be less interested in changing and probably wont need to anyway. How would the addresses look for these hosted trees by the way? something like "genopro.com/johns.family.tree...? I'm just curious!

How would the addresses look for these hosted trees by the way? Probably something like http://familytrees.genopro.com/iaintait/ . Each user will be able to host multiple family trees, such as http://familytrees.genopro.com/iaintait/beath/ and http://familytrees.genopro.com/iaintait/tait/ .

I get the idea, it will be rather like the existing "wanadoo perso pages" with quite long names. Will they be able to update with ftp like regular sites? I think that I personally will continue with http://www.beath.net as it is shorter, easy to remember and already getting known in some circles. Though I could perhaps think of putting smaller trees on your site ie. Beath and Tait without all the connecting families (and without the living as my "Living trees" have password access).

First generate a report on your own PC so you can check what will appear on the web version in a browser. Point to note is that any information on the web can be seen by others, so you may want to remove information about living people.
Second check with your ISP how they set up web space. They normally tell you the name of the server that you need to connect to and the directory where your pages are. There will be a file 'index.htm' which a browser will find when it connects to your site. You can replace this with the GenoPro file with the same name or create a directory into which you put your data.
If your ISP does not provide a hosting service then you will need to find an alternative source.
Some ISPs provide tools to upload your pages but there are plenty of free programs. I use WSFTP from Ipswitch.com. A look on Google just showed how to download the free 'light' version and also a site of Help.
Set up your ftp program to point at the directory on the Host and connect. You will probably need to create a directory and also sub directories such as 'images' and 'pictures' for GenoPro. Then copy the files from your PC to the equivalent directory on the web.
One problem I have found with WSFTP is that it will only copy 2000 files in a session - but that can be got around

I use either SmartFTP or CuteFTP and neither have a limit on the number of files uploaded.

I use either SmartFTP or CuteFTP and neither have a limit on the number of files uploaded. I use Total commander as an FTP program. It's very comfortable.

A new feature has been added to GenoPro Beta 15e to publish online at http://familytrees.genopro.com/. In the Report Generator dialog, click on the Web Publishing button and enter your username and password. Your genealogy report (HTML files, pictures, .gno file) will be automatically uploaded to our server under your account.

Publishing at http://familytrees.genopro.com/ is not supported with version 1.99 for technical reasons. Since every customer has a free upgrade of GenoPro 2.0 there is no reason to support version 1.99 after releasing version 2.0.As for the target, we have ended up with a new road map that pushes again the release date to mid may 2006. You probably heared about version 2.0 for years already, but the "TODO" list is getting shorter and we make our best to stick with it even if we receive excellent suggestions. Version 2.0 is not the ultimate end version; it's a big step toward a series of innovations.
