AFAIK

You might have to rename them to *.txt files. Anyway to see them you need to have Genopro installed, and Genopro would recognize it!

If it works - tell us...

Soon GenoPro will offer this service to host web pages generated by the report generator.  We already drafted the architecture and the technical specifications for security, privacy as well as data transmission.  Jean-Claude will be working full time on this feature in December.

I started with Freeserve that allowed 30Mb of web space. Freeserve has now been taken over by Wanadoo who have a presence in many European countries - don't know if outside Europe.

The system was to sign up on a no subscription basis but you are charged at local telephone rate for the time you are on-line. You had to use a modem to upload files but you did not have to use the service for anything else, so it did not have to cost much.

So there is a small cost involved but if you want to avoid many adverts someone has to pay a bit.

We intend to offer this service free of charge.  My biggest concern is about spam where some individuals will try to sell their viagra or their enlargement pills on the web.  If this is the case, GenoPro will restrict this service to paid customers, or customers with a good reputation (for instance, more than 10 posts on the forum).

By publishing their family tree on GenoPro.com, we know users will link to us which will increase both reputation and visitors.

You had to use a modem to upload files but you did not have to use the service for anything else, so it did not have to cost much.

The architecture will be modem friendly, supporting compression and MD5 checksums for every file transmitted.  We want a publishing feature as simple as clicking on the save button and capable to publish thousand of pages with a resume/continue option if the connection fails.

I tried "free" web hosting at first with poor results, but found by shopping around an inexpensive host site. Though this might crash a couple of times a year, I am happy with the arrangement even though I have found cheaper but untested offers, and as you get nothing for nothing, if your web site is important to you, it is worth paying something for a reliable hosting service.

A problem hosting with GenoPro would only exist for people like myself who already have a domain name and existing web site, but for many others without these facilities, this could be a very helpful solution.

I already have links and logos of GenoPro on my web site.

I, personally don't want to lose my domain name as it seems to be appreciated by some researchers and is already quoted on several search engines and the feed back is most useful and gratifying.

I have been contacted by a surprising number of "distant cousins", many of whom have been able to contribute new and valuable info. on family branches that I didn't even know existed. Tongue

This is a reply to V.L.o (post #9412)

Yahoo already know about this trick and they know how to recognise family tree file which pretended as a text file and they disable uploading of such files

Sorry, I didn't know! I hope you'll find a solution... Could *.svg be a solution...

I hope I won't have this problem... since my ISP in monthly fee includes 10 MB of free web space for dial-up users and 100 MB for DSL... unfortunately I'm still on dial-up...

Could *.svg be a solution...

SVG is not supported by IIS by default.  I had to manually add the SVG Mime Type (image/svg+xml) to IIS.

See http://support.adobe.com/devsup/devsup.nsf/docs/50809.htm for details.

Soon GenoPro will offer this service to host web pages generated by the report generator.

This is a really fantastic development Wow I at present use the free space provided by my ISP (Wanadoo) but if I want to change ISP I will lose the URL for my tree and will have to notify all the family of the change to a new website. In effect this discourages the change of ISP (which is perhaps why the ISPs offer the webspace in the first place Unsure )

Once the GenoPro service is up-and-running, I will only have to notify the once, and hopefully the change will be permanent, whatever ISP I use.
