I have been dismayed to find references to my Web site which is password protected have appeared on Google because I have used references to it within the Support Forum. I see no reason for the Support Forum to be available to search engines. e.g. On Google search page enter ""kerry burns" family tree" and the first reference is a sample of this occurrence.

poolzone (9/6/2006) e.g. On Google search page enter ""kerry burns" family tree" and the first reference is a sample of this occurrence.I can't find such reference. Can you paste the URL of the query? By the way, the password-protection mechanism is done at the server level. If your pages have been indexed, it is because the publication was once public. Just rename the folder to something else and all references from the search engine cache will be invalid.

I tried this and found two references. One was to a page on this forum Navigating from Family narative to individual from index - [ Traduire cette page ] Is it the family page in the detail frame or the SVG family tree? ... On my site if you go to BURNS, then to KERRY BURNS, then to KERRY with MARY MURDOCH ... support.genopro.com/Topic12090-86-1.aspx - 146k - En cache - Pages similaires |
but there was no way to find your tree from this. The other one was effectively ke**y-k**ley.com/ but this site seems to have no password protection at all and doesn't have any Burns on it so is probably not yours. Which tree did you protect and how? I have 20 private trees containing the "living" which have a double password access which even stops special hacking software which was lent to me to try and it was impossible to get past the first password page and siphon off the contents. All there private trees are in another location and not in the main file on my site and so cannot be found by hacking my main tree. Try going to my site where the main tree is open to all as it contains no living details and then try and get into the private trees (the source code is scrambled to hide the passwords) http://www.beath.net/ If you have problems with you password access I could show you the simple method I used which is based on Java script.

but there was no way to find your tree from this Yes I agree that security to my site is not breeched , but the picture of the site and information shown on the Support Forum is maintained on the Google web site. i.e. a picture of one of my report pages. It may seem a small matter, but when we guarantee Family members anonymity and then have them locate these references complete with photos etc on Google, it can be very embarrasing. I do not see any need for the forum pages to be allowed to be accessed by Search Engines.

The password protected feature on familytrees.genopro.com is 100% safe except by brute force (and that would appear on our log and stats graph) .Search engine do not even post data so it's impossible for them to reach to protected pages.

Yes, this did happen once, fortunately Google were quick to remove these references when I requested it, from their Search Index and I have password protected it and carried a Robots.txt file ever since. It is the images on the Support Forum that concern me at this time. It is often necessary to show copies of actual pages to demonstrate to you bugs that exist in the Betas.

Don't worry, nobody will complain about a screenshot on a support forum.

If you're worried about privacy issues, you can always blur or black out names or dates, if not outright using bogus names to recreate a bug or feature you want to show. That is, if I understand your complaint right.

you can always blur or black out names or dates, if I agree , however it demands a lot of unnecessary work, when listing the reports on the Forum is unnecessary and could easily be stopped. I want to be able to report faults, even when I am wrong , in the benefit of Genopro, and am currently constricted by the fact that I have to think twice before lodging a report or else spend too much time protecting my info that fellow Family members do not want released yet, or else make a fool of myself because I find myself on the Worls stage rather than on a closed forum.

We have plans to create a Privacy Wizard to make it easy to create a good, yet easy to use privacy filter. The Privacy Wizard will be capable to save its configuration to a file, so the same privacy filter can be used over and over again when generating reports, saving to disk, exporting to XML, Gedcom and even a copy & paste. Also, we plan to support a feature of excluding comments from a family tree.
