My report at familytrees.genopro.com was created using 2.b19 and is accessible only via password. The site appears to be working normally (from my computer), but another member of the family is reporting a condition they have met, as follows, although I have been unable to reproduce the fault.

Normally there is an option to download the Genopro file from within the HTML page, resulting in the chart displaying with the relevant individual selected.  Options available in the File Download dialogue box at that point are: Open, Save, Cancel or More info.  The Open option then normally allows access to the Genopro file without having to save it.  However, at that point a further 'File Download' dialogue box is displayed which reads as follows:

Do you want to Save this file?
Name   Family Tree.gno
Type   GenoPro Document, 486 KB
From   familytrees.genopro.com

                       Save           Cancel

At the bottom it reads:
The file you are downloading cannot be opened by the default programme.
It is either corrupted or it has an incorrect file type.
As a security precaution, it is recommended that you cancel the download.

What is generating this window?  She had Norton on her computer, but switching that off has no effect.  Note that the option to Open the file has disappeared.  She is running with 2.b19 also.  Any clues?

These messages are produced by the browser. Which one is being used?

Many thanks.  She is using Windows Internet Explorer, version 6.0.2900.2180: running under Windows XP (Home Edition / Version 2002 / Service Pack 2).  The Save / Cancel option is definitely in a separate, smaller window than the first, more usual, "Open / Save / Cancel / More info" options associated with file download at this point.

One thought. Does she have GenoPro installed yet? If she goes straight to a person and tries the link, IE will not know what to do with the file - which could explain why the Open option has disappeared

That is almost certainly the problem. I uninstalled GenoPro and got the error message you describe. She needs to use the hyperlink on the first page to install GenoPro before she can use it

Hmmm .... interesting that you were able to reproduce the condition, which is half the battle.  Yes, she has 2.b19 installed, upgrading regularly since starting in August.  I have just talked her through an uninstall of Genopro, and of course the condition remains the same when trying to Open the file at that point (at an individual).  A re-install of 2.b19, followed by accessing the site again, does not solve the problem.  Is it safe to go back and re-install an earlier Beta version, but I think we may incurr problems with file format?

Beta 19 introduces the Zip format, however it also saves into the ".backup.gno" which is the native format of Beta 17x and Beta 18x.  You can also extract Data.xml from the Zip (.gno file) and import it using an earlier version of GenoPro.  Beta 16 has a different format, so you need to use the XML if you want to use a version prior Beta 17.

One suggestion: Can you try publishing using Beta 18g and see if she can open the .gno file.  Beta 18g will upload a native .gno file to http://familytrees.genopro.com/.  The other solution is to save the .gno file on disk and open it using GenoPro; that will work - guaranteed.

Yes, that does work of course, and also I have used the ‘Send file to’ facility.  But it is nice to be able to open the Genopro file from within the website, partly because the pictures attached to the individual properties can then be leafed through in a logical manner.

We have now done a series of tests, with Anne opening a whole series of family trees published at familytrees.genopro.com with some interesting results.  The good news is that six trees created with Beta versions 2.b18g and earlier all appear to behave normally, with the Genopro file opening okay at the selected person.  But three trees written with 2.b19 (including two of my own, password protected) and two others with 2.b19b exhibit this same problem.

Any clues to why the 2.b19 files wont open from the website?  Anne is using 2.b19.  Also, if Genopro is not already started, it will start okay if any .GNO file is double-clicked within Windows Explorer.

There are two reasons:

1. GenoPro 2.b19 uses a ZIP file format, but with the .gno extension.  Some software may examine the signature/header of the file and determine it is a zipped file instead of a "GenoPro file".  Prior Beta 19, each .gno file was an OLE Compound Document with a special signature of 8 bytes (D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1) dedicated to GenoPro.

2. If a dialog is opened in GenoPro, such as the report generator, then GenoPro cannot open another file.  I think this is a feature of MFC (Microsoft Foundation Class) Library.  I long to free GenoPro from this library.

In the future, GenoPro will offer a URL Open dialog which will be similar to File Open but to open a backup or a file sent to the user.
