I am trying to run GenoPro on a new installation of Linux/Ubuntu (v10.04) using Wine v1.2 as a Windows program loader. I followed the instructions at http://www.genopro.com/setup/wine/ and everything installed properly including a desktop icon with the embedded wine executable with a path to the GenoPro program file at C:\Program Files\GenoPro\GenoPro.exe. When I click on the icon, a status bar item opens up showing 'Starting GenoPro' for about 10 seconds but then it closes and nothing else happens. The program does not open/load.

I see there is an entry in the WineHQ database for GenoPro at http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=8822. It indicates that GenoPro 2.x will work with Linux/Ubuntu and Wine but you have to install a supplemental module called Winetricks. I checked and I had already installed the latest version of Winetricks but I went ahead reinstalled it... still the same problem with a partial start and then nothing. I have rebooted to make sure everything is registered and configured properly and the system is running fine otherwise. I have several other Windows programs running on the system with no problems.

So I'm just hoping there might be some new information or tips from others on this topic.

Okay, problem solved... I see that GenoPro requires the windows mfc42.dll file to run. I found a copy of it at http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/support_dll.phtml?dllname=MFC42.DLL. I downloaded it and copied it into the .wine\drive_c\windows\system32 directory and voila... GenoPro works perfectly! I did not need to use Winetricks to register the file... just copied it into the system32 directly... no reboot required. All functions of GenoPro appear to be working properly although I haven't tried printing or exporting.

Glad you resolved the problem. We also have those DLLs available at http://www.genopro.com/InstallMfcDll.exe

I downloaded and ran http://www.genopro.com/InstallMfcDll.exe since you indicated DLLs (plural) were contained. I see there are two DLLs included... mfc42.dll and msvcrt.dll. The first of those I had already installed as above, the second was already installed (from Wine is suppose)... so I did not need to run the applet.

Regarding the report generating function of GenoPro running on Linux/Ubuntu, it appears that this function does NOT work properly. When running the report generator, the program simply won't process the data file... no stoppage or freeze, it just doesn't seem to process anything. It just sits there with the progress dialog box open and it just stops doing anything before any processing takes place... so I have to say that the overall installation failed, unless you just want to edit the database.

However... I did try another whole approach which did work for installing, running and using report generator on the same machine... which is a dedicated Linux/Ubuntu machine now... I did not retain any dual-platform capability. The solution is to use Virtual Box (http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads) which allows for a Windows emulation within the Linux environment... I loaded Windows XP in a Virtual Box session and was able to make a clean install of GenoPro, accessing my data file from the Linux file system, and then running report generator to produce the report files back into the same file directory. It worked very well. I recommend this method for running GenoPro on Linux.

From my understanding, most distributions of Linux do not support the OLE scripting.  GenoPro uses OLE automation for running the VBScript or JavaScript for the report generator.

I have achieved very limited success in running the Report Generator under Linux (Linux Mint 7) a while back.

I installed the Windows Scripting Host files in system32 (and perhaps some other dlls I have forgotten about).
The 'Export to SQL' skin runs happily but little else. They start to run but then hang or fail. The Config Parameters dialog relies on Internet Explorer OLE and obviously will not run without IE being installed to which I have yet to try but even setting Option to skip Config Dialog things do not work. There seem to be further dlls required which I have yet to discover.
