Genograms act as a snapshot of the family tree and relationships at a given point in time, and usually default to "Now". So indicators such as "Deceased" are dropped in if a person currently lists a death date.
I think it would be useful to be able to make the process a little more dynamic. Rather than always having the depiction of death date and other status marks on the genogram be driven by "Now" or by "Current Status", I would like to be able to set a Snapshot Date. For example, if I were to set the date to January 1, 1880, and have the genogram update all indicators to show who would have been living at that point in time, and which relationships were in force then.
I would use this feature as a tool when searching for Census matches, or for checking against other historical documents. For example, if I'm looking for a family in the 1880 census, I'd like to see that family unit as they existed at the time of the census - which children were still living, parents and grandparents, siblings, as well as which children had not yet been born and which relationships (marriages) had not yet been entered into.
I would also imagine this being a useful tool for walking through history with a family member. For example, sitting down with a grandparent or parent, and setting the date to specific points in time for their childhood, etc. It would then provide a means of quickly matching the time you are asking them to remember - on my 8th birthday, this sibling was newly married, this sibling was off in the army (at 17, lied about their age, etc), Uncle Bob had passed away, etc.
I'm not sure whether this type of request has already been proposed or asked for, it's hard to figure out exactly what terminology to apply to run a search.
