I have this weird situation with my computer. My grandfather did an extensive family tree in Genopro, but I can't open the file on my computer. I have tried to use his version of the program (1.90d), but no luck. The old program simply fails to open it, the new version gives me an error message claiming it can't find the file's location, even though it's right there. I can open the sample files with no problem in both the old and new versions. He tried showing me how to get it running on his other laptop using the very same files that he sent me - and he had no problem installing the old version of the program and opening the file. I tried taking a second copy home in case something got corrupted on the way, but it's still the same story on my end. I checked my firewall and that's not reporting any activity, and that's it for my troubleshooting ideas. Any tips on what else I can try?

Not sure what stage you are at but if you have a working copy of recent GenoPro installed I suggest you use the Find facility, Bottom of first group in File of the main menu. This will search all drives for any .gno files. That should sort out file location

You are welcome to send the .gno file by email and I will investigate the issue.

It came up in the "find" window no problem, but when I click it from there, it can't find it LOL. It specifically says "File not found. The file cannot be found in the specified folder". But I just had a brainwave and wow. Basically, the file name had a special character typical for my native language in it. I renamed it. It works. That was the entire problem. Weirdly enough, the old version was in my native language, but it clearly didn't work on my computer, the special characters were all messed up even in the menus. It was just a stupid "ě" character that I didn't even notice. But I now have a new problem - all special symbols in the names are messed up even if I switch to my native language. But that sounds solvable, it's clearly in between the old program and my current computer settings. Thank you for your help. Edit: Yup, my computer didn't have the appropriate old alphabet code set

Have you checked the language? An option on the top main menu
